Has this ever happened to you?

Last night, I finally glued the first two pieces of wood framework up for the Sea King project. It was just two small pieces of ply that will become the mount for the tail rotor gear box. I set the parts up on the work table, got my square out to be sure the parts were aligned 90 degrees to each other and applied a bit of medium thickness CA (super glue). Went out to watch TV for awhile and give the glue a chance to set up.

When I came back about an hour later, the parts looked perfect! I went to pick it up and discovered the glue had leached through the joint and my mount was glued to the table!
Fortunately, I had the parts sitting on a "building mat" and I was able to separte the parts form the mat without too much difficulty.

Sure gave my wife and mother-in-law a good laugh!

Yes, it has. With that stuff, I have glued many things that I didn't want to many other things that I didn't want. Now I use wax paper under those glue-ups. There are also many plastics that CA will not stick to, and all would work as well.

Waxed paper makes an excellent barrier for glue. It won't allow leaching, and won't stick to either surface. I use it for bent laminations to a form and panel glue-ups.

As for leaching, I learned the hard (and expensive) way. While in a clients home doing an installation, placed a gallon can of lacquer thinner on some clean towels on top of a wood dining room table. It had a vinyl table cloth covering. When I went to pack up and leave, there was a perfect line of the shape of the bottom of the can in the finish. The bottom of the can was dry. I had to bring it to the shop and refinish the top. For the client, they wound up with a better finish.

The sad part is I know all about the wax paper trick. I've used it most of my aero-modeling life. I had in fact, parts of the doll bed I'm building sitting in the shop with waxed paper between a corner joint and the jig!

This purely a case of NOT using my brain. At least the mat I was using was made of a material the CA didn't bond well with.

Moral of this story: think, think and think again, or you will be the source of MUCH amusement for the LOYL and her mother !

I certainly wasn't using my brain thinking that just because the bottom of the can was dry there wouldn't be a problem.

This is why I have laminate flooring glued down to my bench top. Paint, most glue, etc all comes right off with not much trouble. If I forget the wax paper cleanup is pretty easy.

I won't get into specifics about the time I CA glued a joint to my lap.

Try explaining that to the wife.

Bruce, thank you! I wasn't feeling too great this morning until I read your post. Aside from the "visual image" in my head and the coffee stains on my shirt, I'm feeling a lot better!
Of course, that also made me remeber the time I had to take an exacto-knife and cut two fingers and my thumb apart. Isn't CA great!

                    Larry,

Well, at least my pain and embarrassment ended up doing some good. If you want, I can send you the jeans I was wearing at the time, already trashed the underwear.

                    Bruce

                    Hope you feel better

Now that we have heard more details, are you sure it was CA glue that got you stuck to yourself?

I had a similar problem years ago and then was told about wax paper. I have learned a lot of things the hard way.
