    OpenOffice Project

Anyone using OpenOffice by the Sun developers. LOML got a new laptop for christmas and I am facing purchasing Microsoft OFfice 2007 so she can be compatible with her work site. The OpenOffice project claims to be compatible.

Anyone got any input, information or opinions?

    Few things:
    1) I have used it. It works. No compatibility issues encountered with the doc writing "stuff". I used an early version years ago though, it's gotten better since and is generally well regarded. Not quite as user friendly as MS office.

    2) Can she expense a copy of Office since she may be working at home, etc?

    3) Know any students? Student discounts are HUGE at college campus bookstores. You can search for educational license copies too if anyone using the software is a student.

    4) Know any software developers? They often have spare copies from MS events, etc laying around.

    Hope that helps a bit,

Check her license agreement at work. Often times (at least they used to) Microsoft will allow a copy to be loaded on a secondary machine, as long as the primary is not considered a portable (i.e.: laptop).

I don't think current MS Office license rights include a second installation for home use. Those days are gone. As far as OpenOffice is concerned, make the switch and don't look back. It's a very functional suite of programs these days.

I've had trouble with their version of Excell being recognized by others computers. I've tried saving in a couple of formats but no joy yet.
