    Dragged Kicking and Screaming

Well not exactly, but there is a lot of grumbling. Hooked up DSL at my in-laws and gave em a laptop for Christmas. This replaces a WebTV box and dialup. My FIL made the comment that now he can get rid of the typewriter he types letters on.

For the last 2 days been giving computer lessons to complete beginners and moving all their mail to gmail. They will come visit in March and I will show them Word, picture editing, etc.

Three years ago, my 81 year old Mother in law got a computer for Christmas from her childern. Try as we may, she just couldn't grasp working with it and she finally gave up and gave the computer to one of her grandkids. It was interesting trying to teach her some of the basics.

Man, I think I am old fashioned when it comes to electronics but I never did have Web Tv.
Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things

I am my parents' tech support now. My mom called last week while my dad
was out of town. It sounded urgent. I was indisposed so she also called
my cell phone, too, and left an urgent sounding message. I called her back
only to be asked how to do a word count in Word.

LOML was not capable of working the dual floppy Amstrad PC we started with but once we got a hard drive she has been able to do things. Now that she is teaching full time she doesn't have any choice. I set up the DSL and wireless router and that sort of stuff but once it is setup she can use it.

Our parents are a whole different thing. My dad does not do anything on a computer. His wife can do a little email on a dialup service of some sort she has. My mom is using something similar. I think my in-laws have a cable modem or DSL but my FIL is the only one that can use it and his memory is really bad. Before he started to go down-hill, he bought himself a new computer because his old one had a full hard-drive. He never erased any email he got. My wife's sister's FIL did the same thing at about the same time. They figured once the hard drive was full, it was time for a new computer.

I know an older couple with AOL, she doesn't touch it but he keeps up with his family by Email. Every message he gets he runs it thru his printer and even if it is a two sentence message, it takes about seven or eight pages to print all the routing data.
