    Food Poisoning

Friday afternoon was my LOML's office party for employees only. There were about 200 that attended, and it was catered outside like a picnic...hot dogs and hamburgers.

Friday night just after midnight, I hear her yelling from the bathroom. I couldn't open the door, because she was on the floor blocking the door. As I pushed it open, moving her back, there was a large pool of blood under her head.

She was moaning that she couldn't move or had any feeling from the neck down. So, I had her tell what happened and she said she woke up nauseous, went to the bathroom, and sat on the toilet for a moment. Took a dose of Emetrol, to settle her stomach. After that she doesn't remember anything. She passed out, fell over sideways, hit the cabinet and hit the floor face first.

Major damage was a torn upper lip (on the inside), and she has pain in both shoulders, and her skin down her arms is very sensitive, and both thumbs are sore. I sat her up, and within 10 minutes, she threw up. It took about an hour to have her feel well enough to go back to bed.

We don't think about finding our loved ones totally incapacitated like that. This happened to her about 9 years ago, but she didn't have any injury when she passed out in the bathroom then.

Today, she is feeling much better. She can't chew food, and her shoulders and arms are still sore. She called some of the other employees that had the same food, and they are fine. We had the same thing for dinner Friday night except for some salsa she ate that was within its date.

Needless to say we didn't have a very good night. It's one of those things in life that just happens, that we can't predict. But still, very scary finding a loved one like that.

Sorry to hear of your wife's illness. I hope it is food poisoning and goes away quickly. Sounds like the bumps and bruises will be longer lasting.

Last time I got food poisoning I did not pass out or anything but it was from some tuna from an expensive restrauant. We go other places now. The location was convenient but one bad experience is enough for me to go elsewhere.

Again, I hope she's feeling better very soon.

That is a pretty severe reaction to food poisoning. Sounds more like botulism than anything else since there was some nerve involvement. I hate to be alarmist, but I would get some medical attention asap.

That just sucks, C-Man. The only good thing was that she was overcome while safe at home, instead of behind the wheel or something. I'm a lot more careful about food these days, because it seems like you can't pick up the paper these days without reading about something like this. Has she heard whether others at the party were similarly stricken?

Yeah, it's a scary thing to find a loved one like that. Hopefully, she will feel better now.

But I'm with Dennis.....I wouldn't be too sure it was food poisoning without tests. My daughter just got over a bout of food poisoning, also from tuna. She was sick for about a month. It took a couple days for the results to confirm food poisoning.

Scarey doesn't even touch that scene!! It's not unheard of to have a sudden food allergy reaction. Something similar happened to my cousin at a restaurant - collapsed struck her head. etc. The doc said that she had become allergic to fish.

Prayers and blessing to you and yours!!
            Blessings,

That's NOT botulism. We had a case of botulism a few years ago when an elderly lady tasted some carrots she had canned. They tasted bad, so she spit it out and threw it away. That small taste was enough to land her in intensive care, paralyzed, on a ventilator for 4 months. Due to excellent supportive care she recovered, and ironically on the way home she and her husband were in a bad auto accident and they were both admitted to the same ICU unit she had recently been in. She finally made it home in good health.

Thank goodness botulism is a rare thing these days, about 80 cases a year in the US.

Hey c.man, how's the LOYL doing? Did they get the problem diagnosed so that she doesn't have to go through it again? Here's hoping that she's doing well for Christmas!
                Blessings,

Thanks for asking. She called two of her office mates and they were fine. There could be others, but she won't find out until she goes back to work. She has a nasty bruise on her chin, and her upper lip is split on the inside. Seems like she got rid of whatever was in her stomach. No occurrences since the one incident.

I said to her they might think this was a case of spousal abuse. Jokingly she said they won't think that because she lived. What Uncle Cracker said about it being fortunate that it happened while she was safe at home is really true. We really don't think about incidents that are incapacitating. She always worries that I'll have some problem while working, and there won't be anyone around. It sure doesn't take long to bleed to death.

I always think about that, and have had some close calls. Could be as simple as the time I had a problem in my service panel, and I welded a screwdriver to the inside. Good thing it had a plastic handle.

I know how scary that scenario can be. Before LOML got her her back or knee would just give out and she would go down. I came home once to find her in the hall floor. She had been there a couple of hours and didn't have her cell on her when she fell.

Yep, that scenario, Don and c.man's comments are the reasons that I carry a cellphone on my hip while out in the shop. In addition, years ago we both decided to not ignore the occassional loud sound from the other end of the house. We just yell, "Are ya OK"? We figure someone may have gone down hard in a tripping accident or a blackout.

                      Incidentally, Merry Christmas!!!

Wow, that's arough way to spend Christmas. I have been in that position finding my wife passed out on the bathroom floor. Very scary indeed. I wish both all of the best and a speedy recovery.

I agree with germDoc that it is not botulism. If it is really food poisoning, it is probably from Staphylococcus or some similar germ -- they have relatively short incubation periods (+/- 12 hours); Salmonella food poisoning has a longer incubation period (24 - 48 hours).

I would be a little concerned about the passing out. That is not very common with food poisoning, and the fact that it has happened before is troubling. Not to be an alarmist, but if it were me, I would have it checked out and hopefully, it will prove to be nothing serious.

                          Regards, Steve
