Paging Germdoc, trying not to worry LOML, but need advice

This morning I was sitting on the train and took a drink of coke. When it got to about the level of my heart it was like my chest exploded in pain. My vision went out for a minute or two and my hearing became very weird and intense. After a minute or so everything cleared up ad I was fine.

Anyone have a clue on this one? I haven't mentioned it to LOML as I don't want to get her worried. I passed out a couple years ago and she nearly had a heart attack. I had let my blood sugar get low, then spiked it by drinking a coke.

The wierd thing to me is both the fainting and this one were right after I had taken a drink of coke. (and no, stopping drinking coke is not an option, I'm addicted)

"I'm no doctor, but "chest exploding in pain" sounds like you need to call one ASAP and not wait for when Germdoc logs on.

Take this with the appropriate caveats:

I'm not sure what it was. The esophageal symptoms sound like esophageal spasm. Sometimes if the pain is intense it will cause a drop in blood pressure, hence the vision and hearing symptoms.

Esophageal spasm can be triggered by either very hot or very cold foods.

Obviously if you have prolonged pain or this happens with any frequency you should contact your doctor!

I used to get esophageal spasms occasionally when I was in my late teens. For me, it was triggered by gulping down a drink too much at a time. Hurt like he11 for a few seconds, and then normal. I did not have the hearing or vision manifestations. My mother used to say that the drink "went down the wrong way", although there was no drink in the airway. I just stopped gulping my drinks, and it never happened again.

If I have any more problems I'll get checked out, heck if I hadn't been on the train I probably would have gone to the doctor's this morning. Last time (5 years ago) they checked me out (ekg, mri) and couldn't find a thing, not even a brain.

And for me to notice any pain, means it's intense. I broke my arm pretty badly and didn't notice for nearly three days once. I'm always in pain.

Mike, I hope everything turns out OK. But don't take any chances. If you need a doc, you have to tell her.

The only reason I asked is that I've known a couple of guys with the exact same symptoms that had esophageal cancer. They both smoked, and both experienced problems with carbonated/acidic beverages.
