    Timberrr!

Today my dad and I dropped the big tree I was asking about earlier. It was oak. After it was down we paced it off and figure it was about 65' tall. It lost several larger branches in the wind we had last week and I was worried it was threatening my house.

I won't have to worry about firewood this winter, or next. There are two smaller but still good sized ones that are also dead and will have to come down. Wish I knew what was killing them.

Call you county extension agent. They know what the most likely culprit is. I always thought that I was taking advantage of them asking for free advice but I got to know one. He said that that's his job and no one feels used.

I did that - even dropped of a leaf sample earlier this year. He said there were no diseases he could see and back then we weren't sure the tree was dead. His theory is when they put in the cul-de-sac, new septic, etc a few years ago the root systems were damaged and we've had a couple dry years since then so that is what did it.

David, do you have gypsy moth problems down by you? They can kill an oak over a few years of an infestation. You can kill a tree by regrading the soil and raising the ground around the trunk.

Too late. The shorts are all waiting to be split into firewood.

Hellrazor, not sure on the gypsy moths but I don't think it was bugs. I don't really see any bug damage on the tree.
