    Any XWindows gurus?

I've been using XWindows servers (XMing and Cygwin) on my Dell laptop running Windows XP to access my Sun server, both in the office (where the Sun is on the LAN) and from home over VPN. I used it successfully at home over the weekend, returned to work on Monday, and found it would no longer connect. "Fatal error" involving the display.

Since it happens whether using Xming or Cygwin, I figure it must be something either at the Sun end or in my Windows system somewhere deeper than the XWindows servers themselves. After fussing with the various command line parameters for a few hours, I'm even more convinced of this.

Anyone know what Windows system components would affect only the XWindows server behavior and (so far) no other network-related behavior?

Do you have a firewall installed on your laptop? Can you see the Sun server otherwise (ping, telnet, nfs share, etc)

Windows by itself really only has server service for sharing drives/printers/etc and client for attaching to shared devices. Most everything else will be a separate service that gets installed.

Don't know about firewall on the laptop. My sys admin handles its configuration. He's been out sick but is supposedly returning today. I'll ask him.

Yeah, the Sun remains accessible via Putty for command-line activity. Interestingly, if I run VPN from my laptop on the LAN, I actually get just past the Sun CDE GUI login before it hangs with XMing just sitting there awaiting Sun's "desktop". Without the VPN, XMing crashes after 20 seconds without even getting me to the Sun CDE login.

what windows manager does your X-windows session typically use, gdm, cde, (open-win, God forbid) you may just need to ask your SA to recycle the xwin manager
