    Internal Wiki Site

I know a bunch of us here work in IT. I've been asked to look into establishing an internal Wiki site at work. Anybody ever work on a similar project? Any tips and best practices you can share would be appreciated.

    Thank you!
    Chris

I have a departmental one. We use it to accomplish collaborative editing of Data Security policies. Ours is using Sharepoint 2007, it's an out of the box feature if you have that available. I think any tool would work about as well, that's just what we had.

Our process is that only a small internal audience can actually make edits. All changes are tracked. We then publish through a more formal procedure--wiki edits get us up to that point only. It's been a time saver for us. Partly because everyone in my team was already fairly wiki enabled. If you have to explain it to people it's hard to get the ball rolling.

I've used Sharepoint as a user. As implied by linear, you really have to do something of a sales job to get a Wiki to be as effective as it can be. Tell 'em what you're going to do, tell 'em you're doing it, and then tell 'em over and over again that it's still happening - usage tips, summaries of latest content, new sections recently added, etc.

I set up a plone system a few years ago. It worked pretty well and was open source - http://plone.org/.

Selling to the user community would not be a problem because the initiative is coming down from the CIO and I think everybody shares the same sentiment when it comes to going to one site to search and update documents. We will start out by rolling it to our department and if the user community think that the rest of the business will benefit we will open it to the rest of the business.

I am currently checking out twiki.org but will look into sharepoint as well. Thank you!

If anybody else has any info or tips, please feel free to share.

          Thanks!

We have a sharpoint 2007 wiki here, too. Right now about the only people using it are those of us in IT. I agree with the others who said that it's a real sales/marketing job to get other users to buy in and take some ownership.

At first there's excitement and a surge of content, but then it slows down. You really need to stay on top of it to get it adopted.

We use it primarily to document software systems and business processes.
