LOML found me a "free" workbench a couple of years ago. At least, that's what the owner called it. It was 6' x 3' 6", FAR too large for my little shop. Plus, it was only 28" tall, with four huge drawers beneath. Judging by the grease and scars on the top, it was probably used for working on engines.
I decided to take it apart and reuse the parts for more appropriate shop furniture. What you see in the pics (I haven't figured out how to put comments between pics yet) is the ugly 1/4" plywood and what I found underneath. Also pictured is the top, which I thought was MDF until I got it off the carcase. First you see the top, then what I found under the paint and gunk. I splashed a little MS on it for detail.
Why would somebody do this to something that was probably a pretty decent piece of furniture before it was modified?
I'm thinking this is mahagony. Can some of you wood experts tell me what this really is? My plan is to rehab this solid wood top and make some desk clocks out of it.
Thanks,
g.
