What machines would you put in a high school shop class?

I have the opertunity to replace / update the machinery in my classroom. I currently have:

    2 - 10" Delta Rockwell Table Saws
    1 - 8" Delta Rockwell Jointer
    1 - 18" x 6" Delta Rockwell planer
    1 - 17" Rockwell Drill Press
    1 - 10" Delta drill press
1 - 12" Dewalt sliding compound miter saw
2 - 20" delta varible speed scroll saws
    2 - router tables
    1 - 46" Rockwell lathe
1 - Grizzly osc. spindle sander
1 - Powermatic osc. edge sander
    1 - 14" rockwell bandsaw

The machines that will be replaced / upgraded will be the following:

    Table saws
    Jointer
    Planer
    Lathe
    Bandsaw

I have researched many different high school woodshops in my area of Michigan to see what types of machinery they have and to see what they are teaching. After much thought I will be replacing the table saws with the Saw Stop table saws. The lathe I would like to see 2 powermatic lathes with digital speed readout. I would also go Powermatic for the band saw. I am going to push for 2 bandsaws because the students use it so much. As for the jointer and planer, both of those machines are working just fine. However, I would like to replace the cutter heads with the helical cutter heads to cut down on the cost of replacing the blade sets (If the cost is close I may just replace the machines and not just the cutter head). I will also be adding the JDS Multi Router here is their site

My question to you guys....If you could put any piece of machinery in your old high school woodshop....what would it be?

Well, that depends on just where you are in Michigan. I may have to stop by over a few weekends to try out the equipment you already have in your school to be able to make an informed opinion .

      Saw Stop

Bet your insurance premium reduction would pay part of it.

I'd add a wide belt or drum sander, but that is sort of like cheating. they are easy to mess up too.

Agree with Mr Bill. Sawstop would be my first choice without any hesitation.

Next I'd go for a 20" bandsaw and a mortiser.

If you are in the Paw Paw (15 miles west of Kalamazoo) area you are more than welcome to stop by. Just let me know when you are going to be in the area. I am trying to get a webpage going through the school website www.ppps.org. I always enjoy having guests...it's good for the students to see what other people do...
