    what do you think of selling on craigslist?

    "Hello,
    i came across the sale of this item on craigslist.com and i strongly beleive you are the owner and the potential seller,i will like to make inquiries about the item like its present state of condition,the price you are willing to sell it and if its still available for sale ..
    Thank you."


    I've received shorter, yet, just as wierd responses as this, to something normal I'm selling on CL.

    are these types of responses generated by a computer, via spam or something? CL used to be awesome, getting very dicey IMO.

    BTW, my price for the above item, is very, very reasonable, and specifically states that the asking price is firm

      Sounds like a response from one of those scammers from Nigeria. I normally ignore those and delete the emails. If the person is interested and is local, you could normally tell by the way they construct their responses and normally some of them leave a phone number that you can call them to make logistical arrangements. If the grammar is trying to hard to be proper (sucks) that means its a scam. That's my opinion.

          Probably a script harvesting email addresses. If you reply to that, they get one.

          To me it's more aggravation dealing with people not showing up when they say they do. I go out of my way to not be a PITA dealing with CL sellers.

          We converted a bunch of junk taking up space in the basement to cash pretty quick though. I've sold items on CL for more than I've paid in several instances (doubled my money on a bandsaw that I used for a year). I'm in favor of it as a buyer and a seller.

              I get that type of responses all the time. If it looks phony, it probably is. Delete them without answering.

                  It sounds like they are fishing for victims for the cashier's check scam(s).

                  Report them to the craigslist scam line.

                  Otherwise ignore them.

                      I've gotten more than 1 of those emails. It's either to get your email address or scam you out of the product your selling. If they don't mention what the exact product is your selling, its a dead give away that it's a scam. Also I've gotten ones saying they want to send a check and an associate will come later to pick up the item. I've read the way that scam works is the check clears initially but later you find out their account is empty. Either way it's a scam.

                      I still find CL to be relatively safe as long as you meet the person you're selling or buying the products from and only accept cash. I've even gone so far as to have a one of those pens to check for counterfeit bills with me. Definitely safer than ebay where you never see the buyer/seller and many times the payment is a check.

                          If it waddles like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. Don't reply if it sounds funny. If you're not sure, use a secondary e-mail address (you can create a dozen of 'em if you want) that does not indicate your real name or address.

                              When I get one of those, I forward the email with all headers to the Internet Provider using the format abuse@blahblah.net and often they close the sender's account. Makes me glad all over.

                              One more idea, I state no emails in my ads and that seems to work also.

                                  I buy and sell on Craigslist with no problems. As others have said, if it sounds like a scam it probably is.

                                      Your chat about CL pulled the chain on me head's light bulb.

                                      I've got a couple of 70's era semi-pro tape decks that are worth something now. (like 8-trk on half-inch tape) It looks like CL is a snap to work with.

                                      And thanks for sharing your experience. Could be the path to getting jointer funding ... or ... gee, the mind boggles.
