    Winter thermostat settings

So winter is pretty much here for us (about 30F tonight). In the past I've kept the thermostat at 74 or so because my wife gets so darn cold. But now I'm setting it lower (72). And it is even colder than that in here because the thermostat is right next to the big screen TV, so it is seriously misinformed about the actual temp. in the house.

So, where is yours set? And are you setting it any higher/lower this year?

Around this time of year I try to keep the air conditioner set to 72. It was in the mid 80's today so the AC had to work all day.

We have individual room to room heat and AC here in Japan and I really like it compared to central heat in our USA home.
Our bed room here is usually set to 62/64. Living room/dinning room 68/70 and that keeps the kitchen at 64 to 68 without having to turn the heat on in that room.

I have a study, we have two other bed rooms. We only turn those on when needed.

Our AC/heating units can be set manually, or to come on and off by time, or temp constants, or vary temps by time of day.

Hard poll to answer. When I got up this morning, I set the thermostat to 70 and switched to heat to knock the chill off. Around 10 this morning I will move it to 75 and switch back to AC for the afternoon.

I couldn't answer the poll. We keep the furnace set around 65 - 66. We have a natural gas fireplace in the rec room, where we spend 90% of our time. We run the fireplace to warm that room if we feel cold. But we reserve the right to change our minds.

Ours is set to 75, but I think the thermostat reads a little high.

If not for the wife, it would be set to 72 or so. I'll be sitting around in boxers and a t-shirt, she'll have sweats on and bundled up in a blanket.

Pretty funny, but also pretty expensive to crank up the heat.

              Hank,
I am renovating a house i bought here in Kentucky. I was wondering if the units you spoke of are through the wall or in the windows? Electric, Gas, Propane,Etc? Sure would like to know more about this. If possible a picture. 4estgump@bellsouth.net.

In the summer it's set at 75 and winter it's 68 unless the wife is cold, then it get's set to 70 and she uses the blanket.

I have a set back thermostat - 63 overnight, comes on to 70 in the morning at approx. time we rise. Then sets back to 67 during the day, and goes to 70 around 5 PM until 10:30.
Wife also complains about being cold. She hasn't put on her long underwear yet, but will soon and she wears sweaters all year round. If it gets over 70, I start sweating.

Mine is set at 70. When I was still single I set it to 65 and just wore a long sleeve shirt. I like it a little on the cool side.

Winter months 60 at nite while we sleep and during the day when we are at work and then bumped up to 70 in the evening.
Summer months window AC set about mid range about 75 or so.

Like most she likes it warm in the winter and cool in the summer
Me i like it a little on the cool side.

We have a programmable thermostat. I set 63 at night 68 at 7:00AM, 67 the rest of the day and back to 63 after 10:00PM. I work from home and three PC's in my office keep that room temp is usually 2-3 degrees higher so I could go lower with the house temps if I had my way.

Mine is set at 74, but in reality it's keeping the house at 70-71. My office/electronic playroom is right across from it. With 2-3 computers and 3 large monitors running I keep a fan at the door blowing in cool air so the hot air fills the hall.

I hate always trying to explain why the t-stat needs to stay at 77 during the summer.

65 at night, auto bumps up to 70 at wake-up, then 68 during the day if anyone is in the house.

I was a kid during the mid-70's energy crisis, and there were constant advertisments to keep your thermostat no higher than 68. Funny that I remember that, since I grew up with wood heat and the "thermostat" was a finicky damper knob on the woodstove.

61 during the day when I am not at home. Then I bump it up to a more comfortable 70. I then turn
it down to 61 again when I go to bed and use an electric heater in the bedroom set to 74 and set to shut off
4 hours later. Yes it is cold in the morning. I'll suffer it rather than give my money to the heating fuel rip
                              off artists.
