    Making A Christmas List

So I tried really, really hard to discourage my wife, parents and in laws from buying me Christmas gifts last year. I asked that money be donated by charity of choice. No one did it. Instead I ended up with a couple ok things from wife, a very thoughtful gift from parents (family trip to DC) and a huge pile of junk from in laws. In laws are the biggest problem. They buy THOUSANDS of dollars worth of stuff from mail order catalogs every year. Of course 95% of this catalog stuff is pure garbage. You guys know what I am talking about here . . . coin sorters, plastic crap, etc. I really wished that people would not get me stuff, as I buy plenty through out the year () but I figured I would put a list together of stuff that I would LIKE but would never actually buy. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of "cool what I am going to do with this" moments. I sincerely am not trying to be ungrateful, rather I despise people wasting their money on stuff that I will toss out or donate to charity. Anyway, with that in mind I present the first three items on my 2007 Christmas list . . . .

    Lie Nielsen Medium Shoulder Plane

Lie Nielsen No 4 Smooth Bronze Plane

Lie Nielsen No 85 Scraping Plane

So what else should I throw in there, particularly lower cost items?

You can't have too many clamps.

I know exactly what you mean when you say you don't want people to buy things for you. I'd rather have my kids buy something for kids who won't have a Christmas if someone doesn't buy for them. Every year it's the same thing. My wife tells me to be quiet, and let them buy something. Otherwise I'll be ruining Christmas for them.

Isn't it Amazon.com that has Christmas lists available for you to make?

Well, lets see. How about a nice chisel set? But maybe you're OK there. Or, how about a nice carving set? Have you considered carving?

Can anyone recommend a good change sorter/counter? At one time, I had save pennies, to the point I have around $400.00 worth.
That was years ago, and I got tired of counting that out and rolling it.

Now I don't have nearly that much, but I do have a silver tool fund, that is my christmas to myself, that I don't want to pay someone else to roll. (the whole rolling thing got started because my credit union didn't have a machine, and wanted them rolled. Now they B&M when I deposit them rolled, as they don't get a cut)

On other news, my brother in laws family is kinda like that. Buy ALL year (clothes from the beginning don't fit the growing ones by the end), and stick it in a closet. After the fire (piled up to a turned on light bulb), they slowed down. Maybe you should bring that up at dinner sometime (a friend on my newsgroup had a house fire and .....).
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I wished that would work. I can't get them to stop hanging stuff off of exposed wiring in the utility room and garage!

Coinstar converts to Amazon Certificates with NO SERVICE CHARGE. What more could you want?

BTW, some banks still offer this service. Not B of A, Wachovia or the big boys, but the smaller banks do. I know a regional bank called Commerce has coin sorting machines in the lobby.

No, I had never heard of Coinstar. When my credit union merged with another, they brought it on as a $$$ervice, that they don't like you bringing in coins to deposit (I used to do that then wrote the check to my cc company, so whatever purchase I made, it was money off).

What more could I want? More coins then!

In the Washington DC area, a local bank called Chevy Chase has a coin machine that can be used for free -- regardless of whether you are a customer or not. I don't bank there, but this is quite convenient and saves the surcharge that Coinstar charges.

Jeffrey, to you point about gifts, what about books?
