    Amazed Again

My youngest turned 8 month old a few days ago. She and I have played peekaboo twice, maybe 3 times. This evening she was sitting in her high chair and she started hiding behind the chair and playing peekaboo with me. I'd really really like to know how babies learn. Her little brain made the conceptual leap that she had to hide her face.

She can't talk yet but she is learning to sign - my wife has played her the same DVD she got for our older one. I've no idea how babies do it but watching the DVD a few times and she figured out the concept of 'more' and how to sign it.

Kids are amazing, yes? But I'll tell you, if your 8 month old spontaneously played peek-a-boo with you - she is advanced!

One of my grandsons is severely autistic/delayed (11 y.o.). He doesn't speak, and rarely signs, but he has learned a more direct way of communication. When he wants to eat (which is most of the time), he gets a food bowl and smacks me upside the head with it. This is the primary reason we have gone to flexible plastic dishware around here... It was either that, or I was gonna get dain bramage...

I remember seeing a TV program about babies learning. It was really fascinating. It's amazing the things they actually learn while they are still in the womb. They know their mother's voice, among other things.

Heck Ed, that is true. I learned woodworking in the womb when my dad listened to radio shows about woodworking. It's a good thing he was a little hard of hearing and had the volume up cause my mom wasn't always nearby. There was no TV then. It was the first proof of "distance learning". Oh, I think it came on right after "Amos and Andy".

Babies learn at an amazing rate. Their little brains are like dry sponges for information....they really absorb info quickly.

Kids are something else. They can come up with/do the most amazing things. I like watching the grand kids when they don't know I'm watching. I try to figure out what is going on inside their little heads.

She learned about it from a sales pitch 2 days earlier.

Well, bragging some, there is precedent.

Her big sister was talking at 10 months. Not long after it took us a bit to figure out that all the stuff she was calling 'Elmo' was red. So since she'd gotten the concept we taught her her colors. When she was 15 months I sang the Raffi Apples/Bannans song to be silly. She wanted to know what an eeple was. I said it was an apple and left it at that. The next morning with a big smile she shows me her 'blinkie' and 'bootle'. We've been playing word games ever since.
