    50 years - need suggestions

We have our 50th anniversary coming up on the 28th of Dec.

On the 27th of Dec. it will be 9 years since we lost a son to suicide. So that time of year is not what it once was.

It will be difficult to find a way make the milestone special for her, considering the circumstances. I know it's tough, but suggestions are needed.

    Ed,

Have you thought about getting some of your closest friends together for a nice dinner or a surprise dinner out for your wife. Maybe some people that you haven't seen for a while and contact them and family and friends and have a big party to take her mind off the bad part of that time of year and focus on the special milestone that you two have reached.

And of course most women love some kind of jewelry. Maybe something like an Anniversary band if you haven't already gotten her one of those or maybe a three stone diamond rind or necklace. The other thing that is big this year is the Journey Diamond necklace.

But I think having a surprise party with friends and family there will be the most special thing that you could do for your wife. A few years ago I did that with my grandparents and it turned out wonderfully. My grandparents loved seeing some people that they hadn't seen in a while and it was nice to hear some stories and see some older pictures, and of course take some. In 2008, we will be planning another one for my grandparents they will be celebrating 60 years on May 1, 2008.

Good luck Ed and I hope that I have given you some ideas.
Mrs. Wallnut a.k.a (the head nut).

Ed, you might consider a renewal ceremony, either a modest and/or private one, or a bigger one, as you see fit. Time to let her know that, given the choice, you'd do it all over again.

And or a trip to where you took your honeymoon--or where you would have gone if you could have afforded it then.

Actually, these three ideas work well together--the renewal ceremony, a dinner afterwards, and the trip.

The renewal ceremony idea is really special because it's emotional/sentimental and may not be expected from most males.

Having your other kids "stand up" (midwest term for best men and maids/matrons of honor) with you may help them, as well, get through the holidays.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. I should have mentioned that she absolutely hates being in the spotlight. So any type of big fanfare is out.

I kind of like the trip idea, and the jewelry. Let's see - 50 years should equal a 50 carat diamond.

If there were some fabulous flower shows going on that time of year, she would enjoy that. But I doubt we'll find anything like that. Keep thinking!!

Sounds good to me. But we can't go to Florida. You know at our age, once you go there, you have to stay. It's a law.

If you normally send flowers to her on your anniversary, don't! Let her go the day thinking you blew it.

Plan an intimate dinner out and have 50 red roses (or her favorite flowers) delivered to the restaurant and arrange with the manager for them to be kept in the cooler. By this time, you should be in deep trouble for 'forgetting'.

Set it up for them to be brought to the table after you have ordered your drinks. By the time they are carried to her through the restaurant, she will be the envy of every woman in the place and you will have transformed from the 'scourge of the Earth' to the most wonderfl husband on Earth!

Just keep an eye on the other men in the room. Some of them aren't going to be real pleased with you for getting them in trouble!
                  Don, aka Pappy,

Fools because they have to say something.

What Pappy said plus, get her favorite movie star or singer to pop-in.

Let's see. 50 red roses, a 50 carat diamond, nice dinner, trip to some exotic place, and Rod Stewart's showing up. I think I'll need a little help on that. Thanks for the suggestions. Where else can a guy go for advice like that?
