Kids get lots of colds due to little to no immunity. Adults get far fewer and of shorter duration due to prior exposure and better immunity. Having immunity does not prevent colds, but enables your body to fight them off faster and better.
But the only thing that determines whether or not you even get a cold is - exposure.
Adults around no children - rare colds.
Adults around children - more colds that usually don't last as long as the child's cold does.
