Yet Another Stupid Laptop Question - Drives

    Two issues:

HP Pavillion DV9000 series. Empty HD bay. Bought a Western Digital 160gb SATA to go in it. Wife gets home with drive, open laptop and there seems to be some kind of "jig" I need to hook it up. I looked at the main HD and it has a metal fixture around it that screws into the sides and holds it in place. There is also a plastic "jig" that fits onto the hard drive and makes it compatible with the laptop bay connection. Any idea what I am looking for and where I would get it?

Then second question is basically the same thing except HP Pavillion DV5000 series.

Oh, and heck I'll throw a third question in here. Removed (2) 512mb DDR2 PC2-5300 533MHz/667MHz memory modules out of DV9000. Can I put them in the DV5000 which currently has one 256 MB DDR 333MHz, PC2700 module? If I remember correctly memory is backwards compatible.

    Thanks!

DDR2 is NOT compatible with DDR. As to the hard drive housing, I can't help you there, sorry.

Haven't handled any HP notebook, so some pictures would be good.

But first, i am assuming you are replacing a HD (and not 'adding' a 2nd HD)? or did you buy it cheap without a HD ('empty HD bay' makes me ask)?

there seems to be some kind of "jig" I need to hook it up. I looked at the main HD and it has a metal fixture around it that screws into the sides and holds it in place.
or is the original HD still present ('main HD')? maybe you meant the bay has has the metal fixture?

There is also a plastic "jig" that fits onto the hard drive and makes it compatible with the laptop bay connection. Any idea what I am looking for and where I would get it?
Where'd you get the plastic jig? Did it come with the HDD or the notebook?

Jeffrey, the mounting tray for the HDD would have come with the laptop and/or a HDD sold by HP. Since you bought an after-market drive it didnt come with one. HP may have an accessory kit, and or Ebay or the like. Are you trying to put the new drive into the CD/DVD drive slot?

I think you need one of these:

          http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-dv9000-SATA-H...QQcmdZViewItem

But you can certainly do better on the price. I'd root-out the manufacturer part # and then check HP's parts site for it, or find a better deal on eBay.

            To clarify:

There are two laptops in question.

HP Pavillion DV9000. It has a 120gb original hard drive which is working fine. I was adding capacity to the system. Cgallery, looks like you are dead on the money with what I need. Hard drive mounting bracket, 22 pin connector and screws. Agreed, I am NOT paying $65.99 for these $5 items! Guess my shared network drive is the way to go. Look foward to another thread on those! LOL!.

LinuxRandal, thanks for the info on the memory. Figures.

As far as the HP Pavillion DV5000 it does NOT currently have a hard drive in it. It has a few other issues with it so I may just chunk it. I was going to use it in the shop for Internet access to get Sirius connection, forum browsing, etc. Since the monitor seems to be shot (connecting external monitor worked fine), no hard drive, only 256mb memory, seems I would be better off with a $50 used desktop unit from my wifes work.

            Thanks for the help guys.
