    Laptop - Bluetooth Help Please

I want my laptop to have bluetooth w/o using one of the USB plug things. This was an option with the computer where the wireless card would have bluetooth. So I bought a bluetooth/wireless card and installed it. The system installed the driver and internet is functioning fine.

When I open the Bluetooth Devices in Windows Vista I can not find any local devices (it should be seeing a couple devices, PDA, Phone, etc). I click on Options tab and see the "Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer" box is not checked. I check it, hit apply and get the following error :

"An error occured while Windows was saving your settings. THe Bluetooth device might be unplugged.

The following settings were not saved :
    Discoverability settings
    Connection settings"

Any idea what my problem is here? This is a HP DV9205 running Vista. The item I installed is 407159-001 Mini PCI 802.11b/g w/ bluetooth .

Taking a guess here, because I'm not using bluetooth between any of my devices and my laptop.

I don't think you want other devices to find your computer. You want the computer to find the other devices. You'd typically enable Bluetooth and then turn on the device into its discovery mode.

At least I THINK that's how it should work.

Blahhhh. This is annoying. Figured out it is a hardware problem. Apparently the "407159-001 Mini PCI 802.11b/g w/ bluetooth" from HP doesn't actually HAVE bluetooth radio module! Amazing huh?

Which Bluetooth stack were you using? If you have XP/vista, I believe the native bluetooth stack does not support any other than USB based devices. You would have install the Bluetooth stack that came with the card or stack from Broadcomm (if it supports your bluetooth card).

Couple of questions: what is the brand/model of the card? Which OS?

See above post. The Mini PC WLAN card that says "w/bluetooth" does not have bluetooth! Broadcomm states that this means that it simply does not interfere with an installed bluetooth module.

You've got to be kidding! Very misleading of Broadcomm.

Since both WLAN & BT operate on the same frequency, WLAN vendors usually claim that their part can coexist with BT modules nearby. Meaning throughput won't suffer due to interference. This particular part has such claims but the module name completely misleading.

The part you need is 412766-001.
