Recently many forum member's have lost cherished pets. (myself among them) 2 weeks ago I had to have my 13 y.o. Dog Crystal put to sleep. She was the first pet I chose for myself when I got my own home. I was still single at the time and didn't have to consider anything but what I wanted. I found her at North Shore Animal League of Long Island. (New York) At the time I was looking for a Lab or Golden Retriever. She was a mixed breed Yellow Lab and German Shepard. She called me over to her kennel and we bonded instantly. She was a great watch dog, very friendly towards people and gentle with children. Her 1 failing was she didn't like other full grown dogs.
A few years later my wife and I got engaged and had to integrate our K9 families. My wife had a Standard Poodle Friendly as could be and very well trained. (Daisy) Daisy was 4 years older than Crystal and wanted to be Crystals friend so badly but she didn't like the idea. In fact it took a month to train Crystal not to think of Daisy as hamburger.
Later they learned to work together until Daisy's passing 2 years ago at age 15.
We missed having 2 dogs in the house after Daisy's passing and got a Goldendoodle puppy to add to the family. Crystal then 11 was still in good shape and adopted our new pup Onyx. They became buddies the first and only dog buddy Crystal ever had. After about a year of keeping up with the pup Crystal started to develope arthritis. She had another good year but the evening she would get stiff and have trouble getting up. She didn't tolerate the new meds for her condition so we let her set her own pace until she recently started waking up sore and her legs started getting weak. Her pain became unmanagable and when we noticed her shaking in her sleep we knew the kindest thing was to let her go.
We miss her and our now 2 y.o. Onyx wasn't the same without the extra interaction. We knew we'd end up with another dog but we didn't know it would be so soon. We've really been amazed by the short learning curve of our Goldendoodle Onyx so we decided to get her a boyfriend. We brought him home last nite. He's only 10 weeks old and we named him "Que". Onyx and he get along great. Love at first sight. We'll see if she still feels that way when he is full grown. The first picture is both of them.
