The flu shot

My wife and I went to Walgreen's for flu shots today. There were 2 guys giving the shots. One of them looked very young. He's the one I got. As he was getting the needle ready, he asked my if I'd had a flu shot before. I told him I get one every year. He asked if I ever had a reaction to it. I said "No, but I'll probably pass our when you stick me". The look on his face was priceless. He said "Please don't do that. The flu season is just starting, and this is my first year doing this".

Every year, different stores offer part of the premises to be used for giving flu shots ( maybe a local thing?). I don't know if they get a kickback on it, or if they just want to get the people into the stores. Those giving the injections are not employees of the stores.

At least Walgreens has a pharmacy. Every year the flu shot folks visit one of the two grocery stores in our county, and they set up in the little eating area between the deli's rota-chickens and the in-store bank.

Ahhh...the rota chickens. Makes sense. Gives you something to watch before you get stuck. I've seen them things going up and around with no heads, gettin' all brown and shiney...scary. Makes me wonder if they knew each other before they hit the rack.

Last year I got my free flu shot at the local college which was operating a "drive thru" flu shot clinic by nursing students and it was a fast, courteous experience and yes I never got out of the car, just stuck my arm out of the window. I will probably do it again this year.........only in Calif.

That sounds a little on the risky side. They tell us to hang around for 15 minutes because *some* people have reactions to the shots. If you got your shot, drove away and had a reaction, that could have bad consequences.

It always amazes me that some needles can hurt and others don't. A pro can give you a shot or draw blood and you hardly feel a thing. Others are just terrible. (Actually the same goes for dental hygienists.)

Last year I was completely taken by surprise. As I was sitting down, she said something like, "So you work at the b-school? Did you hear about the [prick] new constructions plans?" "No... uh, was that it?" "Yep, you're all set."

It took like five seconds and I hardly felt a thing. I even had a bandage over it when I looked down. Totally amazing.

I think it depends more on the person giving the shot. Some people are very good, while others don't seem to be able to get better no matter how many times they do it. Of course there's a difference between a needle for giving insulin shots, and a 16d nail.

Actually, got mine last week at the Waco VA and we just drove through, very fast, little effort, they did ask us to park and wait about 15 minutes before leaving the campus.

One of my brothers was getting a tetanus shot several years ago & the nurse actually bounced the needle off of his arm twice before breaking the skin the third time. He was amused & irritated about the whole thing.
