Guess I'm lucky. We have a private company (Outside the city limits) and, while we don't have bulk pickup, they will pick up most anything set out with the can like large boxes, extra bags, etc.
An Argument Over Garbage

You might be able to argue that the Tree of Heaven is an invasive, non-indigenous species which you do not want to be sprouting in your yard. Incidentally, hacking it down will shock the tree's system and have it sending up dozens of root shoots in all direction for as far as the root line extends. The preferred method of killing these is to wait until mid summer to make several horizontal, downward, non-connecting hatchet slashes around the tree and fill them with a 'brush killer' at full strength. Good luck with your neighbor woes. I sure don't envy you!
Unfortunately, tree's of heaven ARE fairly well accepted as an indigenouse WEED. The city has argued before that they were a weed, but when there is a full grown tree around, they lost that argument, so they didn't have to be cut down. It is large enough, that I have had shoots for years (family has been in the house since 57).She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.Comment

So you want to talk "garbage!" How about this for separating garbage for pickup?
This was at the 2005 World Expo in Nagoya.
http://www.bt3central.com/attachment...1&d=1191581312
There are 8 different kinds of bins for separating the garbage there. Japanese are fairly good at doing that.
At our house we have to separate our garbage into about 9 different ways. normal paper and food waste go out twice a week; Small bags of tree leaves and clippings also included in this;
Then there are these:
- Pet bottles, once a month;
- batteries once a month;
- small electronic items once a month;
- bottles and glass items once a month;
- IF BROKEN bottles and glass - a different time, once a month
- fluorescent bulbs once a month;
- old pots pans, once a month
- cans once a month
- almuminum cans once a month
All of the above with the dash ( - ) in front, they go out either on the first, second or fourth Wednesday, everything separated in its own colored bag with our city's name on the bag. Wrong stuff in the wrong colored bag and they don't pick it up; Wrong or no city bag used, they don't pick it up.
They do have big containers for the pet bottles and aluminum cans. We have a two hour window to put things out. Can't do it the night before!
IN THE USA, in my small hometown in N. MS, the garbage crew are super helpers. Cain't say enough good about them.Last edited by leehljp; 10-05-2007, 04:53 AM.Hank Lee

We have a similar separation for our recyclables. All kinds of restrictions as to what can go in a City bin, right down to which color of glass can go. Oh, and it has to be in the City bin, a special blue container with the City emblem on the sides.
Hank - The link comes up invalid. On the bulk pickup days, any construction materials have to be in cardboard boxes and not exceed 40 lbs. Can you imagine 40 lbs of broken block in a cardboard box? They use a clamshell bucket to pick up the stuff and boxes get broken up all over the ground anyway.
I think my bulk pick-up guy yesterday was just having a bad day and took it out that way. Usually they are cordial and accommodating.Comment

I wonder why Wkipedia states in one paragraph that it's a tree and in another that it is considered a weed in some countries. Apparently it was brought here in the mid 1700's and became a popular tree for lining streets because of its rapid growth but it stifles other growth because it emits chemical which are stifling to some plants. Kind of sounds like Black Walnut. My slash and fill attempt from this summer has not shown much effect. The tree has exuded a tarry sap which has completely encased the slashes so I don't know if the treatment is taking effect or not. Interesting stuff LinuxRandal. Thanks.Blessings,

Hey Chiz... If you are wanting to pull a "Kevorkian" on the tree, try hammering a few copper boat nails in a circle around the base of the trunk.

That's too funny. I recall a neighbor who hated the state planted Sycamores lining the road in front of hs house. He drove a couple of those into it 25 years ago and apparently Sycamores *like* copper - lOL!
My T of H is about a foot across so I told the forester that I might be able to use the log. He said that the wood is pithy and stinks. I can't tell from my abuse to it, though.Blessings,
Chiz

Hmmmm... I myself have whacked two golden rain trees with copper nails. Killed 'em deader 'n a mackerel... Maybe different species have different tolerances.Comment
