Need some plans or some pictures

I have looked on the internet and haven't found what I was looking for. So I am going to ask all of you because you are all so knowledgable about things.

I am looking for either plans or a picture to show Mark so that we can build the twins (6th) music stands so that when they are home practicing with their instruments they are in proper form and not developing bad habits.

Another question is can they be made out of wood? The ones that they were trying to sell were very simple, but the cost was something like 25.00 or so and I was thinking to make something like that would be better because I am sure we have some scraps in the shop and it wouldn't cost us very much to make a couple of them.

    Thanks guys.
Mrs. Wallnut a.k.a (the head nut).

      Hi Melissa,

Congratulations! You’re my first post in several months.

I know Mark made a Shaker tripod stand for the 2x6 contest a couple of years back, so I thought this design should be right up his alley.

A very simple stand can be made from a tripod camera stand. I made a portable lectern once by taking a 3/8 inch plywood board about 14" by 16" and putting a lip at the bottom. I drilled the right size hole in the middle and screwed the little bolt (that is used to hold the cameras onto the stand) into the hole of the book/music holder.

Totally adjustable in height and angle. A good camera stand is expensive but good used ones can be picked up at recycle places and sometimes from pawn shops.

I've thought about this off and on as a gift for my wife, since she's a singer. I haven't looked at the links that John posted, but there is a company that sells kits (mostly harps) that has a misic stand kit as well.

          http://www.musikit.com/Merchant2/mer...de=musicstands

It's not a cheap kit (none of their stuff is) but it looks nice.

Also, the floding metal music stands that music stores sell aren't very expensive. Just search on Amazon.com and some start around $10 and will work just fine, although they aren't very pretty.

I still have an old Hamilton fold up stand that I got over 20 years ago when I started trumpet, and it was used then. Worked fairly well for me until I quit playing a few years ago due to other commitments. However, I know that is no help to you, and I really don't have anything valuable to contribute, but I'm curious, what instrument(s) are they playing?

Son is playing the coronet (small trumpet if I spelled it wrong) and daughter is playing flute. well at least those are what they will be trying to learn to play.
Hank posted a music stand in the past that I think attached to a camera tripod. Perhaps he can dig up a pic of it again to add to this topic. (duh missed your relpy!) Thanks to those that have so far posted ideas.

Actually, it is spelled cornet. Sounds a little different than a trumpet, but is great for smaller kids because the reach is a little more comfortable. There are slight playing differences between the two, but I never had trouble bouncing back and forth. I used a cornet quite often for one or two songs that I wanted a particular sound for, and then during a piano break, I'd swap back to trumpet.

Flute was an interesting instrument to learn (was a music ed major before I got into computers). I enjoyed it. The hardest part for me was getting the opening at the right angles to change octaves. The fingering made a lot of sense (a lot like saxophone). Clarinet...EVIL!!!! I never could play it right, but sure made a professional clarinetist who tried to teach me in college climb a wall. As any professional clarinetist about a trumpet player doing lip trills on a clarinet.

Seriously, I hope they enjoy playing. I wasn't any good at sports, so music was a great outlet for me for many years.

LOML plays in a flute quoir. They must use the black metal stands in order to have a consistent on-stage look.

This thread has inspired a christmas project, though. Just because she has to use that ugly stand in quoir doesn't mean I have to look at it lying around the house!

I like that last one posted by John Hunter.

Nice stand, ChrisD! What material makes up the bulk of the backround where the cherry blossoms (?) are inlaid? Beautiful. This thread is an inspiration to built a bentwood guitar stand that I''ve been musing over for a few years. I've just never bent any wood before. THere's not time like... er, tomorrow.
                    Blessings,

I hope I didn't give the impression that I made it!

According to the description, the craftsman made it from "Swiss pear, Chilean laurel burl, padauk, English maple, cherry, and satinwood."

I do agree it's a beautiful piece. But nothing Mark can't handle!

You could buy a decent wire fold up stand for around ten bucks. They could then share it (that way you don't have to hear them practice at the same time - lol).

A dowel, a couple of 1X2 scraps, and a piece of sheet metal, or plywood would work fine too I'd think.
