What you always wanted to know about Rod's continent...

    Lifted from another site:

The questions below about Australia are from potential visitors. They were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a sense of humour.

Q: Does it ever get windy in Australia? I have never seen it rain on TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK).
A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

Q: Will I be able to see kangaroos in the street? (USA)
A: Depends how much you've been drinking.

Q: I want to walk from Perth to Sydney - can I follow the railroad tracks?(Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only three thousand miles take lots of water.

Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Australia? (Sweden)
A: So it's true what they say about Swedes.

Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Australia? Can you send me a list of them in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville and Hervey? (UK)
A: What did your last slave die of?

Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia?(USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Aus-tra-lia is that big island in the middle of the Pacific which doesn't...oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Kings Cross. Come naked.

Q: Which direction is North in Australia? (USA)
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Australia? (UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Kings Cross, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

Q: Can I wear high heels in Australia? (UK)
A: You are a British politician, right?

Q: Are there supermarkets in Sydney and is milk available all year round?(Germany)
A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of vegan hunter/gatherers. Milk is illegal.

Q: Please send a list of all doctors in Australia who can dispense rattlesnake serum. (USA)
A: Rattlesnakes live in A-meri-ca,which is where YOU come from. All Australian snakes are perfectly harmless, can be safely handled and make good pets.
Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees. (USA)
A: It's called a Drop Bear. They are so called because they drop out of gum trees and eat the brains of anyone walking underneath them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

Hey Rod, do they really have Hippo Races, where everyone is naked?

Oz is a great county spent 2 months there in 73/74 racing had a great time and did not see any hippos, no mater how much I drank.

Apparently these problems are not confined to the average person, as even our President confused Aus-TRALIA with Aus-TRIA:

Sorry, Rod. I've been to Austria, and I've seen Crocodile Dundee and Mad Max, and *I* know the difference. One group wears lederhosen, yodels a lot, and tries very hard never to bring up the Last War, while the other wears shorts, wrestles large reptiles, and says "Crikes!" a lot.

The women of Austria wear dirndels that show off their ample assets, while the women of Australia wear bikinis that also show off their ample assets.

But only Australia has a tree kangaroo...

It's sad how little most Americans know about their own geography, let alone the rest of the world.

We're going to Namibia next month with friends from Alaska. My wife (who has three college degrees) explains that Namibia is where Angelina and Brad had their baby delivered. I tell people it's on the southwest tip of Africa. Who are Brad and Angelina? Not anyone I know personally.

I've been to Australia several times. Still have not made it to Perth (forget about walking there!) but I have been to such well-known tourist places as Coober Pedy (opal mining), Bundaberg (rum production), Ballarat (historic Gold Rush town, complete with Wells Fargo stagecoach), Coolangatta (beautiful beaches), Wollongong, Brampton Island (wildlife preserve). And, of course, world famous Bondi Beach. Flew over a large part of the Queensland (that's pronounced "queen's land") coast in a light airplane.

I think we might be headed back that way again soon.

My flight from Townsville to Orpheus Island was entertaining. It was in a seaplane about the size of a Cessna 182. The pilot kept tapping the malfunctioning guages. Says he, "No worries. I know the way."

Sure enough, he greased the landing, killed the motor, and coasted until the nose just touched the sand. Beauty.

I did the flying on my trip along the coast. Cost 3 days of vacation time in Sydney getting through the formalities, including one landing and takeoff at the main (Kingsford Smith) airport. I'd do it again We didn't get as far as we'd hoped to and spent one night in an unusual place (Bundaberg) but it was a fantastic adventure not to be missed.

I like the snakes line. Of course there are no rattle snakes but Australia has more than 3 (cannot remember exactly how many) of the most deadly venomous snake spieces known.

Plus they have wombats and tasmanian devils. I'd never want to tangle with one of those things.

In case you don't know what they look like:

The Wombat - smells bad but is a "pussycat"

NOTE: The Tasmanian Devil is a MEAN little sucker
