The news just ran the clip...what everybody here has missed is that she was successful obfuscating the fact that she doesn't know what a "map" is.

I love the fact that she told a reporter that she "lost her train of thought...". Now there is an understatement. It was more like a metal-twisting, fiery derailment...

Jeff, you will need to find out from your state. In Missouri, as my lawyer once laughed (when I made the comment they weren't like that in my youth), they only have to be 17 and 1 day.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

On MSNBC tonight, Dan Abrams put their translator (who normally does Arabic) on her speech...it was even funnier than her delivery.

The first 15 seconds was so painful I had to turn it off.

I feel so sorry for her! I wonder if she went to the George Bush School of Public Speaking?

                      Maybe this will help:

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some ... people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, ah, education like such as in South Africa, and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.
                      Or, maybe not.

This should show the valiant efforts of the MSNBC interpreter:

Uh, yeah, like, I think I, you know, sort of like, get it. The Iraq. Yeah. Why didn't she just say so....

This child should have been left behind. Or maybe she just needs English as a second language classes.

Gosh, you guys are pretty brutal. Give the kid a break.

I admit I shook my head in shocked disbelief, too, but I was even more horrified when I saw the bashing she was getting from the press, celebrities, and the general public.

So she's not quick on her feet, and she probably won't be going to an ivy league school. But she's a teen, on national television, and probably as nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers. Lord only knows what would have come out of my mouth under the same circumstances. Public speaking used to be a big part of my job, and I know from experience that when things go south, you can crash very hard and very fast if you're not very careful.

Has nobody here ever wished they could just rewind and have another go at the previous fifteen seconds of their lives? She just happened to be in a pageant on national television when it happened.

So ridicule the guy who leaves his ID and get-away car keys at the bank he tries to rob, but not the kid who probably really does want to make the world a better place -- however unlikely it might seem to be.

                              Alex,
I agree with you, feel a bit sorry for the girl. I think most folks are just shocked at how bad the diatribe was . . . .

But boy she sure is hot. **** it, did I say that again?!?!?

I don't know, Alex. I feel sorry for her, too, but it was hard to think of excuses once I heard her say "US Americans."

I like the fact that she's been a good sport about this. She's famous now, and if she plays her cards right, she can easily parlay this into a great career.

Edit: Got the video of her Today Show interview. Not too bad, really. Typical teenager. Oh, and she's 18.
