    What a day!

Yesterday, I had the chance to drive 2 laps around the Talledaga super speedway! The speed way has a deal for ticket holders where they can drive their personal car around the track. A buddy of mine is a season ticket holder so off we went. He let me drive while he held the camcorder. NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, you see on TV can prepare you for the first time you hit the banking in turn 1!

They sent us out in groups of about 15-20 cars behind a pace car. We were up to about 70 when we entered that first turn. I had the turn the wheel right to hold the truck on the banking at that speed. We exited at about 87. Turns 3/4 were much better and easier since we entered them at about 85 and exited at about 90. What a rush! We did manage a top speed of 95 (not bad for a 3/4 ton Chevy pick up) down the back stretch. Could have gone faster, but a Mustang was in the way and we weren't allowed to pass!

After that little drive, I have a whole new level of respect not only for the drivers, but also for the safety crews and everyone else that goes around that track.

I have to admit I envy you, but happy for you. Care to try it at Bristol with the 3 story high banks? :-)

How about Daytona with 31 degree banking?

31 degree banking? Is that when your assets are frozen?

I think the banking at Talladega is 33 degrees and yes, my "assets were frozen" at least the firsrt time threw!

That sure sounds like fun. I always loved watching racing there.

Dover, in a Busch car, 10 laps, as fast as you can. Thanks to my wife and an Ebay charity auction. I'll never again say anything like "That can't be that hard to do."

As a high school kid, I used to race unlimited karts. One of our venues was Daytona International. We used the road course, which included portions of the tri-oval. You haven't lived till you've been around Daytona in a 120-mph twin-engine go-kart. After you hit the pits, it takes about 10 minutes for your a-hole to catch up!

That sounds like a lot of fun!

Many years ago I got to drive 2 laps of the old Nürburgring, in my tiny old 45 hp Autobianchi A112. Wow... What a track! There are 2 270 deg turns where the inner part of the road has some serious banking. I got tossed out every time...
