    Most overrated movies

OK, here's a companion to the Overrated Band thread.

Moulin Rouge--my BIL loves it, but I can't stand it. Hearing David Bowie songs sung off key is painful. The whole movie reminds me of a root canal.

Titanic--Titanically long and boring. A Night to Remember did the Titanic story much better. Only saving grace is Kate Winslet.

Jaws--saw this again recently--not too scary, pretty long, lots of cliches. In fact a lot of Spielberg's work--ET, Gremlins, etc.--is cliche-ridden, hacky stuff. Schindler's List, The Color Purple and Saving Private Ryan stand out as real works of art--when he wants to get "serious" he actually does good work.

The Exorcist--not scary and some of the worst acting of all time. Definitely seems dated now.

The Departed is pretty good, but not up to Scorcese's best work. Gangs of New York was bizarre and too overblown. His best recent movie is Goodfellas, which is of course a classic.

Caddyshack--OK, but the stupid parts outweight the funny stuff. The subplot about the kid is not funny and embarassing. Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield are the only good parts to the movie.

The Blair Witch Project--need I say more?

Eyes Wide Shut--virtually unwatchable, even with a nekkid Nicole Kidman. Kubrick shoulda stopped making movies after Full Metal Jacket.

Forrest Gump--pretty simple-minded entertainment, nothing too profound. I find watching simple-minded people pretty boring, myself.

MASH--very dated, some embarassing sexist and homophobic stuff, football game is pointless and goes on FOREVER. Only The Player makes me think Altman's a genius.

Simon Burch--enough sugar in this one to give you diabetes. A friend told me this was his and his wife's favorite movie--I've never asked them for recommendations again.

Mystic River--lots of talented actors, kind of aimless direction, extremely contrived plot turns and twists. Not worth the time. Movies about pedophilic killings in general are lousy, especially if there's gratuitous priest-insulting.

To me, well over half the "best academy movies of the year" going back to the late 60's were way over rated.

My top 3 on the list would be Furrest Gump, Dances With Wolves (Boredom at its worst!), and Cast Away (The whole story could have been done in a twenty minute short.).

Some people take themselves way too seriously. Oliver Stone would be a good example. Any movie with a "Serious Message" is likely to be overdone, overhyped and out-of-date within a year. That's why some of the most entertaining movies--Ghostbusters and Animal House come to mind--are silly, don't have a point and are still fun to watch.

On a side note I saw Blazing Saddles with my teenagers recently--one of my "funniest movies of all time". They laughed at the fart jokes and punching the horse, but they really didn't get the racial and drug stuff. They were very offended that would even be in a movie. Reminds me what might be cutting edge in the 70's may be silly or even downright offensive in the 00's.

Perhaps not over-rated but the absolute worst I've ever seen was Cat People and Heavy Metal!

Jeff, you and I clearly have differences in taste. I liked Gump, Titanic, and Dances.. most of the rest of your list would not be anything I'd watch! Blazing Saddles.. they just don't make them like that anymore.

Pirates of the Carribean II & III, Cat People, all of the Rocky movies. I'm still P.O.'ed that Rocky beat out Network for a Best Picture Oscar.

My favorite movie of all time is Young Frankenstein. Possibly the perfect comedy...

The English Patient. I couldn't believe that thing won best picture. How boring!

On Blazing Saddles, could you imagine the stink that would be raised if that were to come out today? It would be hilarious. I was out of the country for 4 years in the early 90's and I came back to all of this "political correctness". Blazing Saddles is totally non-"PC".

Kudos on the Young Frankenstein. One of the best ever! We should start a favorite Mel Brooks movie quote thread. There are so many good ones.

Star Wars I, II and III. They just didn't have it, and glaring logical flaws. Oh, and then there was Seven, one of the worst movies ever made.

Overrated to me means the hype versus content, in other words a very highly hyped movie that is okay is more overrated than a really crummy movie that doesn't get any hype at all. I never watched Top Gun in the movie theater even though it was extremely hyped when it came out. When I finally watched it on video I was disappointed, not because it was bad, but that it was only average. Same thing with Titanic - average movie hyped out of proportion. We made the mistake of buying Superman Returns since we didn't see it in the movie theater. We should have rented it or waited for the library to have it.
                        - Chris.

I did like Titanic, 7even and some of the others mentioned. Not any of the Star Wars. The force was definately not with me. What I find most appealing in movies is the quality of thespecial effects and the same of humor, if so equiped. Acting comes third and plot or lack of are last. I can tolerate a good special effects movie with a poor plot if the acting sells it to me.

                          Poor movies.

I like that guy. He is very disturbing.
I liked the Xfiles movie as well as most of the Star Trek movies.
                          Contact was good.
Just about anything with Jodie Foster.
                          Jurassic Park's were watchable.

                          The list can go on.
I would give most movies I liked a second look. Not so of any that I don't like.

I can think of a lot of bad movies, but overrated I am drawing a blank on, though I know there are many.

Erin Brockavich comes to mind. It was OK, but nothing Oscar-worthy. I think it was just Julai Roberts' "time" to get an Oscar.

I also rented Gosford Park based on how good it was supposed to be, and it was awful.
