OK, here's a companion to the Overrated Band thread.
Moulin Rouge--my BIL loves it, but I can't stand it. Hearing David Bowie songs sung off key is painful. The whole movie reminds me of a root canal.
Titanic--Titanically long and boring. A Night to Remember did the Titanic story much better. Only saving grace is Kate Winslet.
Jaws--saw this again recently--not too scary, pretty long, lots of cliches. In fact a lot of Spielberg's work--ET, Gremlins, etc.--is cliche-ridden, hacky stuff. Schindler's List, The Color Purple and Saving Private Ryan stand out as real works of art--when he wants to get "serious" he actually does good work.
The Exorcist--not scary and some of the worst acting of all time. Definitely seems dated now.
The Departed is pretty good, but not up to Scorcese's best work. Gangs of New York was bizarre and too overblown. His best recent movie is Goodfellas, which is of course a classic.
Caddyshack--OK, but the stupid parts outweight the funny stuff. The subplot about the kid is not funny and embarassing. Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield are the only good parts to the movie.
The Blair Witch Project--need I say more?
Eyes Wide Shut--virtually unwatchable, even with a nekkid Nicole Kidman. Kubrick shoulda stopped making movies after Full Metal Jacket.
Forrest Gump--pretty simple-minded entertainment, nothing too profound. I find watching simple-minded people pretty boring, myself.
MASH--very dated, some embarassing sexist and homophobic stuff, football game is pointless and goes on FOREVER. Only The Player makes me think Altman's a genius.
Simon Burch--enough sugar in this one to give you diabetes. A friend told me this was his and his wife's favorite movie--I've never asked them for recommendations again.
Mystic River--lots of talented actors, kind of aimless direction, extremely contrived plot turns and twists. Not worth the time. Movies about pedophilic killings in general are lousy, especially if there's gratuitous priest-insulting.
