I know very little about how the music industry works, but I have to agree with tedkitch when he said most "artists are like they come out of a factory." I usually flip on the radio when I'm working in my shop on Saturday's and the best signal I get with music I can stand is from a "Top 40" station. Instead of the top 40, it seems like it should be called the top 10, cause I hear the same songs over and over again. It gets really tiresome. It seems to me that the artists have the vocal skills, but they didn't write the lyrics and they mean nothing to them. Most of it plays out the same tired themes with some cute cliche, chord, beat and/or sound effect to give it a hook. I'm particularly distressed over the extremely overt sexual innuendo thrown in to give it a draw because apparently the writer ran out of ideas.
I like a wide variety of music - classical, jazz, many different forms of pop ranging from hard rock to alternative, latino, reggae, Christian, folk, etc. However, actually finding music other than top 40 pop or top 40 country on the radio is very difficult for me. I may have to break down and get XM.
Okay, rant over. I agree it's entirely subjective, but the most successful and long lasting rock band on the planet has got to be the Stones, and therefore they have got to be the most hyped, and therefore they've got the most to live up to, so they get my vote as most overrated.
Please don't "stone" me for saying this.
