    Question for diabetics....

My youngest daughter has Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes and is exploring the idea of getting a pump. Are there any diabetics amongst us and if so do any of you have the pump (likes, dislikes)? We had a consult with the Endocrinologist this morning and my daughter has decided that she wants to use the OmniPod unit. I am awaiting a call back from the insurance company to check coverage’s right now.

If you have not heard of the OmniPod here is a link to check it out. I think it is pretty cool and will allow her more flexibility as she grows older.

I don't know if this helps much but a good friend of mine is a lead engineer at this company that designs and manufacturers insulin systems. I can tell you that he believes that they really try to put out high quality products. I personally have seen doctors and nurses wearing their products.
here is a link to their site with some health information.

My buddy's wife has been on insulin since childhood and is now 56 yrs old. She started on a pump 2 yrs ago and can't say enough good about it.

2nd hand knowledge. The pumps are great once they are setup. The problem with kids and pumps is the fact they are still growing and it needs to be adjusted.

Pumps work nicely for kids who are fairly well controlled in the first place. They do not eliminate the need for injections completely, nor of course for testing blood sugar, watching the diet, etc. They are indeed very reliable now and require little in the way of maintenance. Personally I have 2 JDM kids using an omniPod. They love it and the lack of tubing is a big plus.
