Sure, but this line

generally means it's bogus. We'll have to wait and see, but I'd feel they were much closer to a real product if the article said something like

"The trio have filed 17 patents so far on the technology and explained the principle of operation at last year's XYZ conference. They are now working with the local university/company to work on a more commercially viable size device"
