Diets become "fad" diets once a bunch of people realize there is more to it than reading about it. Most modern diets are based on a couple of principles that are sound.

What I believe is that the human body was designed to consume a variety of food types. The evidence is the teeth, digestive system, and the sort of environment and food supply we evolved in.

The food types it was not designed to consume are the products of agriculture and excessive processing. Then there's the empirical evidence. What are the fit people eating? What are they doing that the fat people are not doing?

Final point, it's not the things you do once in a while that get you. It's those small errors in judgement practiced every day.

In my 2cents worth: Calories are like money in the bank. If you eat more than you burn off in a day, then you are putting "money" (fat) in the bank. Only answer is to eat less than you need each day and your bank account will start to decrease! I've done it and it works; of course you need to keep active too.
