Last week I was in Canada, visiting my b-in-law outside toronto. They are recent immigrants so we wanted to buy them a computer, but we found that they already have a laptop and did not want another.

Knowing how much it meant for my wife (eldest bro, taken care of her all her childhood after their parents' early death), I insisted on buying other stuff around their apartment - some furniture, computer table, chair, and other stuff. Not too much, just around $900, seeing that their favorite place to shop is Walmart .

My wife knows my views on buying furniture from Walmart, but was amazed at my going along and not 'showing off' (as she says) any condescension. I even told them that once they were settled better they could upgrade to better stuff and we could help them again.

Anyway, she did a payback for me : this morning I get a knock on the door and find a package from Canada. Not from her (she and kids are still there on an extended vacation) - but from DowelMax!

Yup - that's right : she ordered a DowelMax for me : all of $269!!! Dunno how she remembered my secret list of 'long shot wish list', but that is one thing I might not have bought myself!! I have been wanting to buy a cheapo biscuit-joiner, but I guess this should do for most of my needs! I cannot wait to go back home and try it out tonight.

My wife is vastly more likely to do something like that for me than I am for her. It's amazing she married me.

Hmmm, I was checking out the Ridgid 12 gallon shop vac this week. Wonder what my brother-in-law needs done around his house?

My biggest grumble has been that she does not have sisters

But really guys, i come back home and find the Dowelmax sitting on the table waiting for me to break her in , and i say a prayer for the LOML. This thing is just solid, and I could test it out within minutes!! Immaculate dowel joints!

So finally (at long last) I get to own a porsche (in its category) instead of all the yugos i have been buying. All because of one rainy night years ago when i persuaded her to dump the guy she was engaged to...(ok, back to thread )

...and of course, my own generous and giving nature

well, this time it was not planned, but i am gonna keep my eye out for future opportunities to 'do good' in similar fashion. (pity, her other brother could buy me out without straining himself ... ). dunno if it will work again...whaddya bet?


Actually, i should ask the ladies here - do you think it would work if i tried it another time?

I am just kidding - she has great brothers that i get along with wonderfully...maybe next time i'll build them something.

I used the Dowelmax to make all the joints on this cabinet and the drawers.
