    Interesting phone conversation

I have been getting prices on gutters and windows this week. I think you can tell how it is going by this story.

I called a local gutter instalation co. Gutter Works for a quote. I spoke to Jeff who told me he would be happy to help me with an estimate and would set ua time for Tues or Wed of this week. I made this call at 11AM Wed.

    "Hello this is gutter works"
"My name is Bruce Freeman and was to get an etimate either yesterday or today and I have not heard from You. I spoke to Jeff"
"What did you say was your last name, Jeff?"
    "No, I spoke to Jeff"
" Jeff does not give estimates"
    "How would I know that"?
"Let me get him on speakerphone"
(a few seconds later the conference call starts)
    "This is Jim".
" I thought I was speaking to Jeff".
"Jeff does not give estimates.I don't think Jim has you on his list"
"Bruce, What is your phone #?"
( a few more moments go by while both parties get my # and a moment goes by when suddenly Jim Has a moment of clarity and repeats my phone # and address)
"I am on the way to you house right now, Mr Freeman"!
I said"OK" and hung up the phone knowing that I never gave directions to anyone at Gutter Works. I will be the most suprised person on earth if Jim or anyone else shows up.

We just had a new roof put on (I live in California). We used the same firm our next door neighbor used and just like their job a year ago, ours went like clockwork from contacting the company for an estimate to picking out the color of the shingles to installation to cleanup. the only thing we're waiting on now is for some baby starlings to leave the nest they've built in our chimney so the cap can be installed and we can get the inspector to sign off.

I think we've been pretty lucky when it comes to contractors and workmen, but I still worry about the nightmare scenarios ever time we have something done.

In my opinion, shopping for roofers is the hardest thing in the world. Because roofs last (hopefully) 20 to 25 years, if you stay in the same house you buy as a young adult all your life, you only deal with a roofer twice. If the first guy did a good job, good luck finding him 20 years later when you need your next one.

After a storm I had a house reroofed in Madison, MS and the roofer did a great job. I would highly recommend him and use him again, except I now live 180 miles away. In 10 years when I need a new roof on the house I'm in, I'm not going to remember his name and I'm sure not going to get him to drive 3 hours to reroof my house.

They wouldn't need to get directions from you. There are many programs out there that can tell you how to get from here to there with an address.

Now if you only gave them a Post Office box number....

give me you home phone number and I'll tell you where you live (if you're listed).

You need to get an inspection done after you get a new roof on your house?

Update. 2:30 pm and no Jeff or Jim. I am a little sad that we will not get to continue our earlier conversation.

Some areas have nazi building codes and reqiure multiple inspections.. Some require an inspection after the tarpaper is done, some require an end of job inspection and some require both.
