a Gimlet is used to make a starter hole for screws.
it is also used for puncturing the powder charge and inserting a fuse in a cannon
waaaay too easy

I think it looks like a bottle opener/corkscrew. A gimlet is also a drink, which shows where my mind is.

Used to have a starter like that... Came from some old tools I inherited from Gramps. It had a more conventional wooden handle, though.
