    My New Pet Peave

As some of you may already know I am active in the Scouting Movement. Since my son joined Cub Scouts 4 years ago my interst has returned to what it was when I was a youth.

The Boy Scouts of America have an Honor Society named The Order of the Arrow (OA)of which I was inducted into as a youth. Many of my best memories of Scouting as a youth were because of the OA. The OA is entirely youth led with adults as advisers only. We use ceremonies as part of the program with the ceremony players dressed in American Indian Costumes. Lots of symbolic portrayals of the Order's Principals in each ceremony.

Where the pet peave comes into play is that these ceremonies are although not secret they are safeguarded. Lately (at least since I've been looking) there have been a number of the ceremony guides available for sale on Ebay. First my fellow Arrowmen have let the entire Order down by allowing these Safeguarded materials fall into the hands of those wishing to blindly profit by their sale. Lastly when I have politely emailed the listers with an alternate plan for them to make sure that the materials only fall into the hands of those willing to keep them safeguarded I get "you can bid on them yourself!"

If a Scout innocently read and/ or studied one of these scripts prior to his election into this Order his enjoyment and expierence would be severly lessed. Thus stealing memories from a young man. Soon, real soon, I shal post a Blog on my site in an effort to shame these individuals trying to blindly profit at the expense of our youth!

I've asked before and will ask again now: Are there any fellow Arrowmen amoung our fine forum?

Although no longer active in scouting or the Order, I was indcted as an adult leader. We went through the ordeal side by side with the boys, by the same rules. If anyone doubts the importance of honor in the Order, the boys are selected by their fellow Scouts but that doesn't guarantee induction. Two boys were sent packing from the ordeal for failure to follow the rules.

I'm not an Arrowman (didn't stay in Scouting long enough as a kid), but both my boys are. They take their OA membership very seriously.

It's a shame this stuff is for sale. I can't believe some people will spoil the experience for the sake of profit. Oh well, I guess to some nothing is sacred but turning a profit.....

Yep, you've got a fellow OA member here. I remember when I was abducted into the Order. It was such a cool and memorable experience. It took a few years longer than I wanted to get in because in my old troop, it was a popularity contest to get nominated for the OA, and I was slightly less than the most popular kid there. But anyways, I will be getting my own son into Scouting soon, with many years of memories on the way......
Just think of something witty and pretend you saw it here.

In my troop, there were those selected because they achieved in the number of merit badges (and deserved) and then there were those that were son's of the scoutmaster or his friends sons.

My dad died when I was 12 and I had to take a job. Not a lot of time to spend working on merit badges which was my only hope of being selected as I would have loved to be chosen to OA.

But reality is reality and I learned to face it at an early age. I could not make my mark as an OA which was my hope at the time, but made it a little latter in something that I cared little to be chosen for. Reality is reality...

          Regards...

I'm not surprised you posted this. Don't think you can change the world. Those selling reverent items may not have earned or owned them. I had to do a lot of digigng in boxes, and I can't believe I actually have this after all these years, but is this familiar to you? Sorry 'bout the fuzzy pic, but I've had a hard week and couldn't hold the camera too still.

I also have other items packed away somewhere, like "WWW" items. To me they are treasures.I've saved everything that had real meaning in my life (even my first baby shoes). One of my most memorable items I've saved is a pair of underwear from my Army days. I was wearing these the first time I was shot at. Wonder what they would go for on EBay.

Cabman, looks like it yellowed over time, or does it need washed? Mine is still nice and bright white, at least it was the last time I saw it, several months ago. It's in the same box as my merit badges, scout books, uniform patches, etc.

Started out in cubs (mom was one of the den leaders), moved onto webelos, then scouts. Was Senior Patrol leader for years. My final year they made me something like "Junior Assistant Scout Master", so one of the younger boys could be Senior Patrol Leader. There was a nice age gap from me to the next one. We were going thru some tough times.

Question for other Order of the Arrow people out there:
Do you mention it on your resume?? I do but have been thinking about removing it. I'm running out of space, and also find most people have no clue what it is.
                  Ric

I only memtion it in my resume when i know the person reading it has knowledge of the Order. Otherwise just a generic "Leader in Boy Scouts both as a youth and as an adult"

OA here as well as both sons. We are finally winding down out of Scouting after many years. At first it was pretty hard not to be in and doing Scout stuff every week, but now we just help when asked. It seems like that should have freed up a ton of time, but, somehow, I'm busier than ever.

I agree with you about the disappointment that the profiteering by some can cause. Besides the OA info, I also have a problem with all of those "ready to race" Pinewood Derby cars. That is another way to rob the kids of the real benefit and joy of the exeperience.

Hopefully, those who are currently actively involved in Scouting will not generally be the ones who are buying these sort of items. Otherwise, I think they might as well stay home and watch a movie about Scouts instead of experiencing it.

OA here. I was inducted when I was about 14 years old, and enjoyed the experience very much.

Unfortunately, over the years and the many moves I've needed to make, all of my OA stuff has dissapeared, but it did make for many fond memories of my youth.

I was in the Scout Movement from Cubs to Weblos to Scouts to Explorer to Den Chief. This lasted till I was 17 y/o when I finished High School.

OA here as well, and I agree with the opinions stated.

As far as resumes....OA and Eagle don't appear as a rule, but they do if I feel the recipient would appreciate the meaning; and I've been very surprised a few times by comments made after seeing it noted (always very positive).

I agree that OA on an resume would be lost on most people. My son does list Eagle on his. That is something most employers recognize and respect.
