    Songs for kids?

What are the top 3 songs your kids love? (and what age are/were they(kids)?)

Not necessarily 'kid' songs (ie, by kid bands or barbie/disney songs).

While I am not talking nursery rhymes, I am still thinking 'clean' lyrics (well, at least not explicit).

My daughter (5) told me she loves 'Who let the dogs out', and even 'Man! I Feel Like A Woman!' (Shania Twain), and "wanted more like those" and I realized that I don't have much of an idea about other 'similar' songs they might find appealing at that age unless I poll other kids. (My guess is - steady beat with some words they can recognize and sing, but then, what do I know ).

In my experience with my daughter (she's 10 now) ... finding music she'll like is really easy. All I have to do is find songs that absolutely annoy me to no end and it's guaranteed that she'll love it and play it OVER and OVER and OVER.

the chicken dance and achey breaky heart are two examples that immediately come to mind
If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!!... but you can always 'hop it up'

We have several CDs with kid songs from various cartoons, kid movies etc. My two-year old daughter would only listen to those when in the car. So far, she does not request playing them at home.

I compensate by switching to Rammstein when driving alone.

My mom asked me to copy some cd's, so the kids (ranging from 4 to 10) wouldn't scratch them up. I was suprised by the songs on them (they were sold as kid's albums at a private school sale). I was really suprised by them
Buffalo Springfield - stop children what's that sound
        Beatles - Yellow submarine
Sheb Wooley - Purple people eater
        Byrds - Turn turn turn

Three albums in the series one whole album was mostly antiwar/protest songs.

        Made me feel OLD
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I have found that our twins(11) listen and like most all the songs that we listen to. Lynard Skynard, "Sweet Home Alabama", ZZ Top, and all country it seems like.

I know that if you are looking for some good ones for her to sing along with Carrie Underwood is a good one, our daughter loves that one. And the one that really cracked me up when it first came out was Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman" song, our daughter would sing it as loud as she could and it has just one word in there that was bad.

IMO Country is the way to go.

Tick Tock - Family Style album, Vaughn Brothers
My oldest son, now 17, loved this song when he was 4 or 5 years old.

I Feel Young Today - Gematria album, Peter Himmelman
My sons, 3 and 6 at the time loved this song and much of that disk. They called it the "funny face" album in reference to the cover.

It's amazing how much '70s and '80s stuff they like and have downloaded the last few years. Staples office supply had a advertisement using Rubber Band Man by the Spinners that they asked who it was by and the name of the song so they could download it from Itunes.

Yellow Submarine makes me go nostalgic - have to get that for myself now

Country is actually a very good bet, particularly at the age where being able to sing along is big.

Have to try out the other suggestions too - thanks in advance.

But like everything else, kids take after parents a lot, at least in the early years. Not being the heavy metal type (and not owning any of it), I was amused at the reactions of my daughter(s) once when we walked past a joint playing Led Zeppelin - hand over ears and "eeww, what is that noise!"....

Peter, Paul, and Mary had some songs for kids that would probably go over pretty well today. "Puff, the magic dragon" comes to mind, although it wasn't necessarily directed at kids (?). Tom T. Hall had one by the name of "Sneaky Snake" that would probably go over pretty well too. You might have to blow the dust off those, but I'd bet they'd be winners.

My kids like everything by "Trout Fishing in America" check them out for sure--they are good songs that won't drive you crazy either. A few titles:

                  Alien in my nose
My hair had a party last night
                  When I could fly
                  Baby's got the car keys

It's good stuff, check it out.

I can't believe this one slipped my mind, but one artist that both my daughter and I absolutely love to listen to is Ray Stevens. He has made a TON of good stuff that is hilarious while actually keeping a tune.

Now I've got the Mississippi Squirrel Revival stuck in my head

I forgot about Ray Stevens too. Wasn't he the one who had the song about the squirrel in church?

My 4 and 5 years absolutely love The Beatles. Its amazing. Early Beatles have simple rythms and lyrics that they enjoy and single. The drug year Beatles are just whacky enough that the kids love them as well. I Am The Walrus, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds both mean exactly what the title says to a 4 -5 year old.

My 10 year old son is listening to the worst music in the world! (every parent right?). R&B and Hip-Hop crap! "I'm Bringing Sexy Back" ? Really? At 10? Hmmm.

Incredible that I too had forgotten about Ray Steven (Mississippi Squirrel Revival is about a squirrel in church) while I did remember Joe Scruggs (There's a wiggle in my toe). Thanks.

Beatles...hmmm...there's a thought I need to try out.

and yes, the 2 digit age somehow gets them to that stuff. My 8 year old wants 'grownup songs' but we are trying our best to keep it away, as yet. The one she loves (and again) now is 'I saw Mommy kiss Santa'.
