Good people still left in this world!

Last Wednesday my son was returning from leave (in uniform). While connecting through Houston airport, someone approached him and simply said "Come with me". That gentleman took my son into the Presidents Club at the airport as his guest. My son had a chance to relax while waiting his flight and thanked the gentleman.

I have to admit I teared up when he told me about it. There are still some good, make that GREAT, people in this country. To that individual; I thank you from the depths on my heart.

He checked into his duty station and they let him go for the 4 day weekend which he spent in Seattle. He stayed with another soldiers family who offered him a place to stay.

There are still good people in this world! Be kind to the next soldier you meet.

Growing up next to a military base, I really learned to respect the sacrifices that the soldiers and their families endure. There are a couple of things that I like to do (not trying to brag, just share some ideas).

Many veterans have stickers on their cars that state that they have served and I always like to honk, wave, mouth a big "Thank You" and drive on. When I see one at a rest stop or a restaurant I buy them something. I once gave an upgrade ticket that I got for first class to a soldier. He acted like he won the lottery. During the first Gulf War I used to go and mow the yards of many of the families in the area. Most people never understand the sacrifice of the wives when their husbands deploy. The sacrifices that the children make. Kindness or even a thank you never fails to put a big smile on their face and makes me feel really good too.

At work we have one fellow that is a reservist (Marine)(Semper Fi!) and when he has to go away for this two week duty every year, we pay him so that he doesn't have to use his vacation time. The sad part is some other employees complain that it isn't fair and that they all deserve the same thing. I used to tell them that if they were involved in an activity where they got shot at that I would consider it, but then one of our guys was shot at during a tee-ball game in South Philly, so now I have to tell that they have to go and fight terrorism.

Good story. Thanks for mentioning it. Yeah there are still some good people out there but I'm afraid to say harder and harder to find now a days. America is just not America any more. I don't want to bum this thread out so I'll stop now. Glad to hear the story though. Men in uniform should have all the respect and then some that our police and fireman have. Sadly they don't get enough either. God bless your soldier.
May you die and go to heaven before the Devil knows you're dead. My Best, Mac

God bless all those fine folks. I remember guys coming back to the "world" from Nam and getting spit on in the airport.

Glad to see that's not happening anymore.

That was a great post. It's always nice to hear about the good in people, instead of just how bad people can be. One thing's for sure. Those in uniform deserve to be treated well, even if they don't expect it. Thanks for posting.

I think the people have learned a great deal from Viet Nam. It's doubtful you'll see that kind of reaction in this day and age, regardless of where they stand on the war. Those were very dark days for the U.S.

Last summer my next door neighbor, who lives alone, had his reserve unit activated for a few month period in Afghanistan. When I found out, I told him not to make any arrangements for mowing his lawn, as my family would be honored to take care of that for him.

The military pulled a surprise on him and accelerated his departure by a couple days so he left earlier than we had been told.

One morning, my wife noticed a military guy ringing our neighbor's doorbell. He left without getting an answer. Later, we saw a tow truck leave our neighbor's car parked out in the street. Since that isn't allowed in our community, we were concerned that it would be ticketed. I called his cell phone.

That's when I found out that he had been activated abruptly and had left early that morning. On his way to report for duty, his car broke down. That resulted in him being late, hence the military visit to his house (they thought he had gone AWOL).

When I told him that the towing company had left his car in the street, he said that they were supposed to put it into the driveway. He thanked me for the info and contacted the towing company right away before he left on his flight. We made sure that the towing company got it right the 2nd time and let him know when all was well.

He appreciated our watching over things for him. I told him I appreciated him sacrificing for us.
