          He starts with X apples and ends with zero:

          ((X/2 - 1/2)/2 - 1/2)/2 -1/2 = 0

          ( X/4 - 1/4 - 1/2)/2 -1/2 = 0

          ( X/4 - 1/4 - 1/2)/2 = 1/2

          ( X/4 - 3/4 ) = 1

          X/4 = 7/4

          X = 7
