    How does craigslist make money?

No ads/banners. Don't pay to buy or sell (unlike ebay). They don't even ask for you info to send you spam. Just curious as to how they make $$$.

They sell classified ads (employment ads, I believe) to businesses in the larger of their markets.

They only have like a dozen employees, by the way -- and I think they all work out of a house. (That may be a myth -- not sure. In any case, not a lot of overhead.)

It turns out eBay owns a small piece of Craigslist but exercises absolutely NO management control. As can only happen in California, the owners are focused more on the journey and less on the rewards, in spite of the fact that they have a gold mine. It's killing the newspaper business, which used to make tons of money selling classified ads.

They charge for realestate ads and other commercial ads. They do make good money. Enough to make the owners millionairs.

Sounds like a pretty stand up guy. Craigslist is becoming popular throughout the world and has a great formula for continued success. I hope ebay doesn't do anything to screw it up.
