Had a buddy in SC that lost his left leg below the knee in an accident. (He was drunk and walked out into traffic.) No longer drinks and has a great sense of humor when it comes to the leg.
He rode a classic Harley with handicap plates. State had to have them custom made for him. Gets some strange looks when he pulls into a handicap space.Don, aka Pappy,

Nah, not too nosy. Born with Ollier's Disease, caused stunting of the growth in one leg. By the time I was 15 I was wearing a custom built shoe with an 11" lift on the bottom, and a full leg brace including a waist strap to hold it on. Had a choice: keep that or go for a partial (called a "Simes") amputation and a prosthesis.
Mom was great. She found a guy through work that had 2 prostheses, one above, one below the knee from getting hit by a train. She had him come over and talk to me about the pros & cons. Spent several hours with him. It was totally my choice and that made up my mind. After 43 years the prosthesis is starting to cause other problems, but it's still better than wearing a 30 pound brace! Now I need a new leg every 3 years or so.
Had one that lasted 23 years with few problems! Somewhat of a record according to all the leg-makers I've talked to.
BTW - the gentleman with 2 "pegs" made his own. Kinda cool too. He'd leave the bottom section slightly hollow and had holes on both. When he wanted to hide something he had 2 "ready-made" safes! But no, I've never tried making one.Comment

Well shoot. Met the real LOML in my new job 6 years ago. She asked me out, and I told her I couldn't 'cause I had to go get a new foot! She didn't know either.
Presumptuous? Shoot no. Most folks who actually see me never know unless it's hurting a bit and I limp a little. Usually the kids in clinic notice first, then their parents say "I never knew!"

If my memory is still correct, I believe that he owned either a night club or vacation resort in the Catskill Mountains in NY State.
Some how I seem to remember bill boards advertising his place and they used a sillouette of him along with the copy.
Anyone here in the East remember that to, or am I just have another flashback.
