    Any Coffee Lovers Out There?

If one of my doctors said I have to quit drinkin' coffee, I think I would suffer the consequences. I will not quit. I drink a lot of that stuff. I have not found a replacement. Tea? I don't think so. So, what else is out there? There's hot chocolate. If I drank as much hot chocolate as I do coffee, I would probably weigh 400 lbs, and have diabetes. For me, coffee seems to be the perfect drink when you need it.

I guess I can say I'm hooked. You know, the "ine" thing. Like nicotine, and caffeine, which they say has a stimulating alkaloid. My general standby is Maxwell House - Bold French Roast. Then my second in line is Don Francisco's - Cinnamon Hazelnut. I used to like Melitta - French Market. When I'm out, the on-the-road coffee is usually Dunkin' Dougnuts, or Denny's. They aren't too bad.

So, if you drink coffee, what's your favorites?

I love coffee, but I too saw my blood pressure creeping upwards. I finally decided that I would rather give up my coffee than take medication. I haven't had a drop since January 1st.

The first week was awful, but then my body adjusted. Some day's it's still hard as I sit right next to the coffee pots at work and have to smell it all day. Most of the time, however, I no longer think about it.

Most of the time I'd just drink Folgers (because I'm cheap) but there were a couple of local shops that made some awesome cups of joe.

I like to roast my own. Fresh beans (from any country) roasted and brewed less than a week old would be very hard to beat.

Starbuck's french roast. Grind the beans right before brewing.

BTW, I like coffee; cream and sugar is for cereal!

"Tim Hortons which is also known in Canada as "Tim's" or "Timmy's" is number one here ... but you'd most likely have to be Canadian or have visited Canada to understand ... however I have discovered that our Tim Hortons has now invaded Michigan .... watch out Krusty Creams!

Yeah, me too. But I switched to decaf everything because caffeine was causing esophageal spasms that feel for all the world like a heart attack. 3 episodes of that and 3 ER trips and $$$$ tests - decaf now and hope it doesn't recur.

On the highend, I liked Gevalia's Stockholm roast...their Traditional is good too. For everyday I'm just about as happy with good ole 8 O'clock regular roast for a fraction of the cost. For a treat, I have ordered from the Delanoga General Store in Delanoga, GA (or however you spell it )...good stuff!

For everyday, Trader Joe's French Roast. A friend of ours periodically sends down an organically grown coffee sold by Olivers in Santa Rosa, CA, that's heavenly. Very strong stuff.

I broke the habit of cream or milk and sugar (except when necessary to make really bad coffee drinkable) when a college roommate pointed out that they hid the taste.

Don't care for the mass-market brands like Folges, Maxwell House, Chock-Full-O'Nuts, Nestle.

When we had a conventional coffee maker, I found that Martinson's "Fine Grind" tasted beter, at least to me than $8.00 and up a pound (in bean) coffee that I was buying from a store in NYC (Mc Nulty's) who only roast small amounts at a time. I used to keep the beans in the freezer and grind only what I needed for the amount I was making.

Well, that got real old real fast and I was turned on to Martinson's. This is supermarket canned coffee which sells for about $2.75 for the usual 13 Oz. can.

A few years ago my wife got me one of the new (at the time) "pod" type machines. Clean, easy, and I can even do it when I first wake up (and not able to see straight).

I found that Senseo pods (either Dark roast or Sumatra) are the best and even though the cost is more than bulk cofee, 18 Pods cost me $3.50 a bag at Target (best price). You get a great cup (encluding a foamy top) and no grinds to spill on the kitchen floor as you try to empy a filter basket in the trash.

BTW, I drink approx 6-8 large mugs a day, and can even have a cup right before going to bed.

I like Starbucks House Blend. We grind the beans just before using.

Recently we bought a couple of Flavia Machines [another "pod-type"]. I like their Columbian and Intense Dark Roast. LOML loves the machine, and has one at work. She likes the teas and frothy drinks the machine makes. I'm a coffee black guy myself.

I have no right to contradict your doctor. But, my physician says there is nothing wrong with moderate coffee drinking.

LOML works at Hortons and she's had enough of their coffee so I only get some when I'm on my own. I do how ever get two cups of tea on my way to work every morning. I would have no problem packing in coffee for good as long as there's a bottle of scotch near by

OK, I'm making notes here on coffee to try out. I've always used the drip type coffee makers, except for a Melitta pour through (works good with gas stove to boil water, when electricity goes out). I do have one of those old percolators, that I think I used once in the last century. Does anyone use them anymore? As a kid, our family used one that got heated on the stove and I remember sitting at the kitchen table just mesmerized by the little glass bulb on top get perked darker and darker. Those were the days before I drank coffee. Those were also the days when my grandmother would make chocolate cake and let me lick the chocolate from the bowls before they got washed.

And today more than a half century later, what still sends my senses is coffee brewing in the morning.

I can't figure caffine out. I can drink a mug full at 9:00 PM and am sleepy by 11:00 PM. It doesn't phase me that much. But if I go off of caffine for two or three days, I get headaches. I drink 3 to 4 mugs (about 2 cups each) a day in the winter and 1 to 2 a day in the summer.

I told my kids I wanted a big mug for when my doctor and MilDoc told me to cut back to one cup a day. SO here is their answer:

With this, I only need one cup a day; Shucks, It might do for two or three days!

ON Coffee brands, I do go to Starbucks two or three times a month here, but I stongly prefer the New Orleans type of coffee, especially with chickory. I usually bring back several pounds of Community Coffee - regular and dark roast with Chickory and Decaf with Chickory.

Starbucks and other strong coffees get too much flavor from the "roasting" and not enough from the beans. New Orleans coffees have more of the bean flavor to me, even the dark roast.
