    My 1st GPS

    Found one of these:

    https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=173

for $100 at Dick's Sporting Goods (had a $50 gift card to use up too)

I was just wondering if anybody has this model or any experience with it that could share their thoughts on the unit.

    TIA

    Thom

I'll bet your woman is pleased that now you have a device that will let you find your way OUT of the tool store.

I don't have a GPS, but would like to get one. Thom2...let us know how that one works out. I would like to get one that would be a pocket one like that, but also had the abilit to do detailed road directins as well.

Does it tell you to swim the Atlantic ocean if you put in a start point of your house and a destination of London, England ala google maps?

Good price. I had one for about a year. gave it away to my FIL when I upgraded. I found it useful, but really needed one that would allow for external antennaes (sp). Sometimes down in the bottom of a gorge, the etrex legend had trouble picking up birds. Other than that, I didn't have any real complaints other than limited memory on the legend model.

I've used both MapSource (Garmin) and TopoUSA (DeLorme) with that unit and my current one. I really like the Delorme product since you can get some 3D rendering.

Anyway, i'm sure you will enjoy it. They are great toys, er, I mean survival tools.

There was a great cartoon in yesterday's paper (Baby Blues) that shows the father using a borrowed portable GPS for directions, then arguing with his wife over whether he should listen to the female voice giving directions from the GPS or listen to her.

I have one with a moving map in my airplane and I would not be without it. The FAA-approved units are horribly expensive and don't come with a pleasant female voice that gives directions, but it paid for itself yesterday when a hornet suddenly appeared in the cockpit and I needed to find the nearest airport in a big hurry.

I imagine a clean change of shorts would be useful in such a situation too

I've had the eTrex Vista for a couple years now. It's the next model above this one I beleive. I got it over this one for the Electronic Compass. I'm not sure that the upgrade has been all that valuable to me but...

In my opinion, these models are great for hiking (or geocaching, which is why I have mine) but not so good for navigation while driving. At $100 that's a great price.

What will you be using it for? I think this unit is best for telling you where you are at and has some basic maps to follow. If you want one for your car then you may want one that will tell you when to turn. I got this unit 2 weeks ago for $200. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=6384 The StreetPilot c320. Everything loads on an SD card. A one gig card will hold all of the maps of the US plus points of interest like ( every Rockler location or every Harbor Freight location).

I used it to drive to Florida from Michigan. Very simple to use and difficult to get lost since it will recalculate the route if you make a wrong turn. At any time you can ask it to find the closest whatever (ice cream store, bank, shopping, hospital, gas station, etc).
                            Thanks again,
                            Mike

I've been stung before and while it hurts like ****, I'm not allergic. However I really hate small flying things and you can't afford to be distracted while flying past a major international airport (San Francisco). So landing and getting the little bugger out of the cockpit was the prudent thing to do.
