    Shut-Down Speed-Up

I picked up a tip recently on how to decrease the amount of time Windows XP takes to shut itself down. If you don't mind Registry editing, here it is:

The first part of this tweak deals with setting the amount of time Windows will take to kill open applications on shutdown.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value. Set it to ‘1000′.

Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value. Set it to ‘1000′ also.

The second part of this tip changes the same settings, this time for all users on the system.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to ‘HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
    Panel\Desktop’
Highlight the ‘WaitToKillAppTimeout’ value. Set it to ‘1000′.

Now highlight the ‘HungAppTimeout’ value. Set it to ‘1000′ also.

In the third part of this tip, we will alter a second registry setting to decrease the amount of time Windows XP will wait before shutting down active services after receiving a shut down command.

    Open REGEDIT and navigate to
    ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contr ol\’

Highlight the value ‘WaitToKillServiceTimeout’ Change this value to ‘1000.’

This should help to considerably speed up the time Windows XP takes to shut itself down.

HTH My shut-down time is now around 8 seconds.

    Ray.

Thanks Ray. Mine takes so long some time it fall asleep and stops shutting down. Mine also take along time to boot up. I think there are to many programs loading on start up will have to check it out also.

I like to use the Windows key shortcut:
        Windows key
        U
        U
        Enter

        and walk away.

Simply yank the plug out of the powersupply. Very quick.

You can choose which programs start at start up using msconfig.

You may want to check things like, spam, spyware, viruses, etc. not to mention things that are loaded up at startup.

Yup, that's a pretty nice guide CPU magazine published. Though I'd rather improve boot time and overall PC speed - the time to shutdown is kinda less important.

                  Ray,

Will it kill them gracefully or not gracefully? If the latter then it is really no different than just turning the machine off. And of course you run the risk of corruption, depending on what you are working on.

Reducing the wait time is all that's happening, as I read the Registry keys. The application will still be dealt with in the normal way, it's just the delay before dealing that's gone.

                    Ray.

Worked for me, Ray. Shutdown was over a minute, now down to 10 seconds. Thanks.
