    Excel 2007 Help

Ignore prior post about Excel 2003. I created a file in Excel 2007 Beta which I need opened and saved as 2002 and prior Excel file. Anyone running a Beta or full version of 2007?
    Thanks
    Jeff

    Jeff;

You can download a viewer for the new file formats that will allow you to open and save Office 2007 documents with the earlier version of Office. Here's a link to the viewer package:

      Mark,
Have you used this with any success? I just installed it and it can't open the Excel files and it turns Word documents into gibberish.

I'm running Office 2007 - and love it.

I can fix it for you...

I think you're in a heap of trouble. The file format for Excel 2007 changed between the Beta and RTM (Released to Manufacturing Version).. I think the file formats of the other products changed a bit too - which explains why the file viewer for word wouldn't display the beta version of a word document...

So -- here's the sneaky trick -- all the .xlsx, .docx and .pptx are really ZIP files. So -- if you can't read the .xlsx rename it as a zip and locate the workbook.xml file from the xl directory in the zip...

You should be able to open the raw XML of the Excel document with the current version (RTM) version of word -- in any case you'll be able to access the XML document ( an xslt ) should be able to translate it into an HTML table or a csv ....

Pulling this trick is a bit harder for Word and PPT.

Thanks Rod -- my only experience had been trying to run a demo virtual machine that used Microsoft Sharepoint Server (MOSS) using the Excel Beta -- and the files couldn't be opened from a client that was running Excel RTM. I discovered that fact standing up in front of about 10 Federal Government CIOs and their staff.

I had to quickly switch the demo over to use a browser running on the virtual machine accessed through terminal services... Ouch.

                  Jeff,

No, I haven't used it. I was aware of it from attending a conference at Microsoft last year. I did a search to see if anyone else had reported problems with the viewer and didn't really see any issues reported by anyone else. I did find a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that said you could not open a 2007 file from the Office program, but instead have to open it from Windows Explorer by double-clicking to activate the viewer. Here's a link to the article:

                  Hope this helps,

                  Mark

Not at all! (First line of my post said "Jeff had an "oops")

                        1. The first item he sent to me was a .DOCX file,
                        2. The second item he sent to me was a .XLSX file

Isn't it amazing how confusion can reign
