"You spend hours on end down in your shop making things that's going to help you make things. But you never make anything!" Obviously, she just doesn't get it.

    Sounds Very Familiar

I hear that comment on occasion, my response is that you have to have the tools to make the project. And I throw in that I'm buying now and will enjoy the tools more when I retire.

I used to hear that also. Make her a step stool for the kitchen. Nice quick project she'll use everyday for a long time.

Perhaps a garden bench. Even if it's a fast build, as long as it's sturdy and can last she'll cherish because it was made by you for her.

          But keep it SIMPLE.

Then say: "Well I could have made it nicer if I had a " (insert next tool purchase here) and your off to the tool store...

Oh, I just tell her, "Well, you spend hours on the phone without really saying anything" OR

"You spend hours in a store without really buying anything"--well at least anything we need.

And my personal favorite..."You spend all day at home with the kids and don't really get anything done..."

Sounds kinda like a former neighbor of mine. Before he retired, he did a Rod Kirby (upgraded everything he could) and then upon retiring, got to spend a lot less time in the shop. (wife, had plans for him, traveling, etc).

In this case bigstick, your title says it all!
