    Monte, We Still Miss You

Today marks exactly one year since since we lost our dear friend Tom Drake, better known to us all as "Monte." I know I'm not the only one who still misses his gentle presence around this place.

For those who did not know him, Monte was, at the time of his passing, BT3Central's most prolific poster. Following the switch to the currrent vBulletin software, he was the first member to earn the "Forum Windbag" moniker under his user name, upon reaching 5000 posts (and the only one to do so: that title was subsequently retired, in his honor). Monte's posts may have been many but they were almost always short and to the point. If Monte thought you had a good idea, he'd say so. If he thought you had a bad idea, he'd tell you that, too. And if he spoke favorably of your workmanship on something you posted in the Finished Projects section, you could be sure that you'd done a truly fine job.

On March 19, 2006, we all wished Monte a Happy Birthday, never suspecting that he had barely one week left on this earth. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly just eight days later, on March 27. Fittingly, he was in his shop at the time. His grandson Kyle broke the sad news to us all; three days later, Sam temporarily shut down BT3Central during the hour of Monte's funeral.

You can see pictures of his shop, his work, and the man himself, here.

Rest in peace, Thomas L. "Monte" Drake, and know that you have not been, and will never be, forgotten.

I'm the type that either is on the computer too late at night (due to hours, and safer then in the shop), or early in the morning (on my working days), before I am completely awake.

Just last month, I said I hadn't seen him post in a while, and was going to go looking for him, then I realized.

        Gone, but definately NOT forgotten!

I remember him with a moment of silence and a Guiness this evening in the shop.

Thanks for posting this Larry. I tried earlier, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. This thread has brought a tear or 2 up.
I do miss you, Monte. Be proud of Kyle and smile down on all of us.

I'd like to again post the Woodworkers Prayer in Monte's honor, and hope to remember to do so on this day every year:

              The Woodworker's Prayer

Angels guide my hammer, angels guide my saw
Angels guide my working hands and all my planning thoughts.
Angels guide my planer, angels guide my lathe
So every night when work is done I leave the shop unscathed.

For as I do my daily work I lift my head and pray
That angels dance along my bench and guide my every way.
Be with me in the morning, and when the sun does set
Make sure the work that I do now is the best that I've done yet.

And when the day's receding, and the stars begin to show
I know my work is guided by the Lord's most loving glow.
Keep me safe while working, and let me do my best
And each day I will feel accomplished as I lay down to rest.

So angels guide my tools, and angels guide my hands
And I will bring to life the beauty of these simple plans.
For when I work with angels, I know my work is true
And I am doing what the Lord intended me to do.

              Amen

Time has a way of slipping by. It doesn't seem like a year has gone by. Rest in peace Monte.
