    Steaks!

My parents have about 20 acres in 2 locations with 15 head of cattle. My mom called - they sent some of their beef to the abbatoir yesterday. She wanted to know what to hold for me. This is all free range - grass/hay fed, no preservatives or any other junk. It is about as lean as the premium lean from the supermarket. I don't buy beef from the supermarket any more - if my folks don't have any I don't eat beef.

I wholeheartedly agree, David (like you need my approval -LOL). What I noticed right away was the color of the meat - deep burgundy. Not the bright, kind of artificial ed you see in the stores. Secondly the beef has flavor. We regularly eat wild game and the kids never flinch at wild taste but when I had a bad year hunting we put store-bought beef on the table and they wanted to know what the funky meat was - wouldn't believe it was beef.

Anyway, I'm jealous - just lost my supplier.

What you mean is, they sent some of their cattle to be slaughtered. Warm, cute, intelligent animals.

Aw, who am I kidding...I'm just jealous you have access to good meat. I dated a vegetarian for a (very) short while in college. It was during that time that when I looked out at a herd of cattle, all I saw were Porterhouses on legs.

It's kind of like when I was a forester and I learned to count the # and sizes of boards in a standing tree. My "greener" friends didn't understand how I could do that.

My mon's actual words were "we sent some beef down to the abbatoir". She thinks exactly the way I do.
