I don't think this has been posted before (hope not), but this link contains some great tips for increasing the speed of browsing with Firefox. I followed the instructions to the letter and have definitely noticed a much better speed since.

Last week I experienced great delays in the speed in having programs open that were iconed with Firefox on the desktop shortcuts. A window would appear saying that there was a problem opening, and then I would "X" it out and then it would open.One of my security programs (AntiVir) picked up some bug and quarantined it. Since then Firefox opens the programs but not real fast.

In the Address Bar at the top of the screen (which shows http://www.bt3...), type in about:config and smack enter.
A new page pops up, with a Filter bar. In that, type in max_total_viewer and smack enter. This will show only the above item.
Double-click it and a dialog box will appear that allows you to change it. Enter 0, hit enter.
Exit and restart Firefox.

What the heck is all that?

Seems like the blog was created with a word processor that left spurious characters. In each instance of "“" "″" and "�" you can interpret those as quote marks. "’" is an apostrophe. Translation below:

Increase the Speed in Which Firefox loads pages
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30.
This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "layout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages faster now
More options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click > New > Interger or String

"ui.submenuDelay": set "0" (zero)
Kill RAM usage to 10mb when FF is minimized
This little about:config hack will drop Firefox's RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized
1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter config.trim_on_minimize. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.
Ok I hope this makes a few people's browsing experience a bit better with Firefox and debunks a myth about there being a bug.

I made all the modifications and may be it speeded-up the Firefox but still the Opera is faster in start-up and browsing.

Some interesting features of the opera;

"Wand" that enters your username and password by clicking on it.

"Block content", that can block any picture or parts of the page that are not related directly to the page i.e. all the "dancing and jumping" adds that are not only annoying but also taking time and space to download (it remains in the memory for every site so when you open next time you will not see all the junk).

Every Bookmark is automatically opened in new tab.

You can set it to "Reload" (Refresh) the page every 5, 15, 30 seconds or 1~30 minutes.

There are additional Back and Forward buttons with two arrows, click and you go back to the beginning (not the previous page but the first page that you opened.

I noticed that the Firefox is getting slower and slower and I had to shut it off, clean (Ccleaner that removes some 10MB after every session of firefox) and restart so I'm just using the Opera normally.
