Tell me it really isn't this bad

We all know that the kids today lack the kind of exercise we had growing up because of TV and video games. But now I've heard it all.

I read about a program that is being offered by the parks department in a nearby town. This is for kids 11 years old or younger. The cost is $35.00 plus $5.00 for a jump rope. They will teach kids how to jump rope! Kinda reminds me of the pet rock!! Are our kids that bad off that they can't even learn how to jump rope? I don't think so. It sounds more like a place for people to drop their kids off for baby sitting.

I wonder if they're teaching (or getting kids interested in) some of the more advanced stuff you see in competitive jump rope. My town happens to be home to superior team, with lots of record holders and national championships. Apparently it's a very serious sport (3-hour practices, etc) and is gaining in popularity. It's actually pretty impressive to see what these kids can do...

Yeah I could see this sort of thing if it's like a class, where they do different games with jump ropes (like group stuff) or learn the advanced stuff.

Heck I'd pay to do that...it looks like fun and I've always enjoyed jumpin rope in groups.

Now, if the kids are handed a 50 cent jump rope from wally world, and sent out to the playground to jump by their lonesome, that IS ridiculous.

It's frakkin' jaw-dropping amazing, is what it is.

The young lady named Kelsy Moe who is mentioned in that article is my (only) niece. She's a member of the Summerwind Skippers, out of Boise, ID. She's barely into her 20s and already she has literally traveled the world (Belgium, France, Korea, Australia, Spain, more) and has appeared on Good Morning America and Late Night With David Letterman ... and all because of a piece of rope with a handle on each end.

If you think I'm proud of her ... yep, guilty as charged.

Those kids that jump rope with all the tricks and things are amazing. Wish we had something like that here so that our daughter could do it.

IMO I think that its sometimes the parents that sit their kids down in front of the television or video games because it keeps them entertained and busy and its easy for the parents to get things done.

But they are saying that kids these days are doing too much sitting and they are trying to encourage them to get outside and do things that way they don't have health issues when they get older, at least that is what it seems to me.

We limit our kids on the video game that they have to three days a week for a couple of hours. But with the weather getting nicer out and they got their bikes out the other day it seems that they want to be out riding their bikes now, which I like, and when the weather is nice I like to take the baby out so he can play or walk around.

Larry, you should be proud of her. My youngest daughter and I watched a show about some jumpers on Nickelodeon and I was amazed by them.

I had no idea there was anything like that. Maybe it's actually something the kids can benefit from. If nothing else, just getting them outside is a good thing.

I never could jump rope. I think I lack that gene. Along with the genes for dancing and pretty much anything that requires coordination.

Ed - under the "I've heard it all" category, we have some friends whose daughter is in high school and is taking PE classes online. That's right - online gym classes. How is the teacher supposed to verfiy that the student did anything? Crazy.

In the "Feel Good" society we live in, it is not important that anyone puts out the effort, and actually excels. As long as they feel good about themselves, that is the important factor -- "We are all winners!"

The current generation has been labelled one of the most narcissistic groups ever. Some kids expect everything to be handed to them. Why? We have a generation of parents that have told their kids they are "Special". Many have not been told to work hard and treat people fairly, and you will go far. But when I get all cynical, I see my neighbor and his kid working over the Winter in a cold garage, rebuilding a car engine, so the boy could have a car to drive (which he paid for himself).

Restores my faith that we might just make it!

Your right ,Jawdropping. The Summerwind Skippers have preformed at basketball half time at our local JC (College of Southern Idaho) what they do is an absolute pleasure to watch.

You have every reason to be proud of your niece.

Indeed! In fact if there are still any doubters out there, I found a video on YouTube of our local team (national champs) at a Duke game. Not the best quality, but it gives you an idea of what they can do.
