    Need McAfee help!!

An employee here has a Windows ME, with McAfee on it. When McAfee expired, he purchased and installed the new version which dose NOT support Windows ME, on top of the old. Actually he tried it many times, not to mention his son.

Needless to say it's all F*****-up. McAfee programs trying to load all over the place until it runs out of resources. I was able to stop some of it. At least enough that I can work on it.

Is there a program out there that will get rid of ALL McAfee stuff, on a Windows Me (remove all files all over, and clean the register)?? McAfee has a program that will do this, but it's not supported on Me (2000 and newer only). I need an older version. Was hoping someone around here happened to have one. Searched the net but with no luck.

There is nothing in the Add/Remove, there is no uninstall / remove in the program files under McAfee. There might be a file somewhere on the hard drive, but I don't know McAfee well enough to know it's name, or location. Tech Support won't help, since they don't support Windows Me.
I don't know what version since I can't run it with out the computer going crazy.

About the only thing I can do, if I don't find a uninstall program, is to go thru the computer & registry piece by piece. I would rather spend the 8 hours it would take doing something a little more fun like watching paint peel.

I would try this first to get a clean boot and see how it looks after that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267288

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've been there, done that. I use msconfig a lot to trouble shoot what is causing problems. I have the various McAfee programs "disabled" right now. Still need to uninstall everything, so I can put another Anti-Virus program on that will work with Windows Me.

Had the same problem with my son's machine. Did the same thing you did to try and fix it. Finally went into the Add/Remove Panel and removed anything I could find that I thought was related to McAfee. Rebooted and still the computer wasn't right.

The @#$%^& McAfee program is a really large number of separate programs.

Did a Google search and found a Web Site that had a list of the files that needed to be removed. Removed them and that fixed the problem.

BTW, the same thing happens when you try and remove Norton.

I looked for a list on what files to remove, and what needs deleted / changed in the registery, but had no luck. Didn't have much luck finding anything related to Windows 98/ME. Seems like morst of the links were dead ends, or only mentioned Windows 98/ME when saying it would not work with them.

Norton I wouldn't have a problem with. I'm use to dealing with them, and I have the programs / papers on file at home for the older stuff.

Still having troubles? This page has a Virus Scan removal tool that SAYS it works with Win ME - maybe give it a shot:

I have no way to test it - I somehow was lucky enough to skip ever owning Windows ME

              remove mcafee

This information may provide something you haven't tried yet:
              http://tools.mcafeehelp.com/doc.php?...541&support=ts
              http://www.vcn.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=429

              http://www.fas.harvard.edu/computing/kb/kb0937.html

Good luck. Looks simpler just to back up the useful data, wipe the drive, then reinstall the programs and data you want. Or, you could suggest the employee get a new computer so he doesn't run into a similar problem in the future. Any new program he/she tries to put on an old computer could lock it up. There are desktops available for less than 500.
How much is your time worth? Is 8 hours of your time worth more to the company than $500? If so, get the company to get the employee another computer and be done with it so you can enjoy watching that paint dry.
