I think Verizon is probably trying to establish legal precedence with this case before they go for the companies with money (Time Warner, Cox, etc). I've read that the language in the patents is pretty vague, so prior art would probably be a great defense. I don't think it'll mean the end of VoIP, though -- there are already millions of users. Even if there ends up bing a 5-10% royalty, it's still a pretty good deal.
Plus, for $199 I'll break even after three months -- every month after that is just gravy. And if it takes the whole two years to settle, I'll end up saving about $1,400 -- enough for a couple of good tools!
If something catastrophic goes down, I imagine it'll take longer than three months to do so... but we'll see!
